    David Fitter Departs

    From Rugby Heaven overnight:

"(David) Fitter has declined an offer to continue with the Western Force and arrives back on the east coast on the player market, lining up to bolster the Sydney University front row at the right end of the season.

With three rounds remaining, Fitter will qualify to play in the finals if he plays every match, starting with a game off the bench against Gordon at Chatswood Oval on Sunday."

In the poll, a) rate his 2006 Force and b) rate how great (higher the number the greater the loss) a loss he is to the Squad.

I read an article in The Australian from memory a few weeks back, saying the club couldnt guarantee Fitter much forseeable game time.Report suggested he struggled with the pace of the game around the park and he may possibly be better suited playing in Europe(France was suggested) on heavier tracks.

He seems to struggle with mobility and would be more suited to a northern hemisphere style of play, where the props, are big, strong and slow.

    Fitter parts ways with Force

    Fitter parts ways with Force

    Friday, July 28, 2006

The heavyweight clearout at the Western Force has continued, with former Wallabies prop Dave Fitter parting company with the Perth-based franchise after just one season.

Fitter arrived in Perth from the Brumbies at the start of the Force's first Super 14 season as an established member of the Wallabies squad, after being elevated to starting tighthead prop for the ill-fated tour of Europe last year.

Starting in John Mitchell's inaugural side as the undisputed No.1 strong man in the Force front row, Fitter's star gradually faded over the year.

After the 120kg 29-year-old failed to make a second string Force Gold squad to play Japanese champions Toshiba earlier this month, the writing appeared to be on the wall.

And on Thursday Fitter informed the club he would not be taking up an option of a second year on his contract, and returned to Sydney the same day.

Fitter will line up for Sydney University this weekend, expected to start off the bench against Gordon at Chatswood Oval on Sunday.

With three rounds remaining in the Sydney competition, Fitter will qualify to play in the finals if he plays every match, and would hope to catch the eye of recruiters on the east coast.

Fitter's departure from WA follows the exit of sometime front row colleague David Te Moana, a 124kg apprentice, who was let go as part of a club restructuring which will see the training group reduced from 40 to 33.

Flyhalf Brock James, who started six Super 14 matches last season, has also left after appearing likely to become fourth in his position's pecking order for 2007.

James has accepted a deal from French club ASM Clermont.

Coach Mitchell has so far added four new additions to the squad - Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell, Ryan Cross and Troy Takiari.

Personally, I was hoping for more from David Fitter. He just didn't seem to offer much around the ground, and didn't seem to be quite there in defence (often literally).

What I find interesting is the expectation that the squad will be cut to 33 players, especially given how thin the stocks got last season with 40. By my count the squad is currently at 35, so who will be the two to go?
