Extra Set of Hands for Coaching

Whilst on my phone today I saw an article that Steve Borthwick was going to assist the Force for a few weeks in the pre season. Eddie Jones was being given credit.

Even for a short time hope the Force can use his expertise.

Wessel's and the New Force are a breath of fresh air

British & Irish Lions coach Steve Borthwick to spend fortnight with Western Force

    Tom Hamilton
    Rugby Editor

British & Irish Lions and England forwards coach Steve Borthwick is to spend a fortnight with the Western Force.

Borthwick, who was unveiled on Wednesday as one of three Lions coaches acting under Warren Gatland on the 2017 tour of New Zealand, flies to Perth on Thursday to take part in the Super Rugby franchise's pre-season skills sessions over the next two weeks.

    EDITOR'S PICKS

Simplicity: The secret behind England's success
Exclusive: Melbourne Storm defence guru Jason Ryles talks to ESPN about his fortnight with England, Eddie Jones, the two-man tackle, Ben Te'o and why simplicity is brutal and beautiful.
Under Eddie Jones there has been a sharing of coaching nous between England and Australia with Melbourne Storm coach Jason Ryles spending time with England while Borthwick sat in on some of the NRL side's training sessions last June. Ex-Wallaby Glen Ella acted as a coaching consultant under Jones on England's tour of Australia while Jones also brought in rugby league great Andrew Johns to spend time with Owen Farrell and George Ford.

Borthwick's rise to Lions coach has been rapid given this time last year he was Bristol's forwards coach in the Championship but Jones hopes he will be able to garner some key insight into what it takes to beat the All Blacks when he travels to New Zealand in June.

"It's a great learning experience for him and he gets the opportunity of learning how to beat the Kiwis, which is important," Jones told Sky Sports HQ.

"He's a very analytical coach, a very serious coach and he knows more about line-outs than anyone else in the world.

"He gets the chance to learn about New Zealand rugby culture and the chance to play basically 10 Tests against the best players in New Zealand and by the end of it, if he hasn't beaten New Zealand he should know how to beat New Zealand."

If Borthwick can help with the lineout then there is a bonus.

Jono, you can't knock a bloke for wanting a few extra inches on his column.

The Western Force had an open training session at the Perth Bayswater home grounds yesterday morning.

Got to see the players in action and going through paces, and a chance to see several new faces in action.

Split into 2 groups, the backs went through a few ball running pieces at speed and it looked very slick.
The forwards were under Steve Borthwick with lineouts and maul work being looked at.

Great morning, incorporating the kids into the huddle afterwards. All personal very open to photo and conversation.
