Ben Ryan reveals $35 million Super Rugby plan to secure Fiji's place on rugby map

A revolutionary plan is being worked on to end the player drain from the Pacific Islands by establishing a Super Rugby franchise in Fiji – and it has already secured more than £20 million (NZ$35m) of backing.

It is understood that more than four global companies and two leading kit manufacturers have pledged to fund the proposal to -create "the best club side in world rugby" on the island.

The new team, which could be operational by 2018, would be based in a new 20,000-seat stadium included in plans to develop the Port Denarau Marina in Fiji, close to the island's airport in Nadi.

    Oh shit.
This would allow for the closing of one Australian team While still keeping the current broadcast deal

A lot of presumptions in the article.

How would you get players back, moving forward it may keep future ones at home, like the Sunwolves roster may not be compettive enough to start.

    Stadium not yet built

Not even put forward to SANZAAR who have more than enough on their plate to cope with at the moment.

    Let's start a rumour.

Fiji to replace the Brumbies in Super Rugby from 2018.
To appease the broadcasters in having another time zone to raise there viewing audiences, it only makes sense to remove a team on the east coast. The Brumbies are in a lot of trouble financially, have ASIC investigation underway, no coach from 2018 onwards and most importantly the ACTRU has the least amount of registered rugby players compared to NSW, QLD, VIC and WA.

    That might stir the pot.

It might also all be true.
However my suspicion is that Melbourne will be folded into the ACT

Hi all another rumour to fuel the fire... How about the SA in Sanzar is dropped and the au/nz/ pacific Islands and Japan make a ring of fire league.. Not sure how successful it would be but would stop a lot of travel and make SA pull there heads in.. This would increase the talent pool across the Pacific region and poss bring in west coast USA... Only a rumour and a bit of fuel on the fire.. Could we survive without the Yappies.. I know it would upset a lot of people in Perth

the secret to sack racing is to be in bare feet, rolldown the back of the sack, put your toes in the corner, and run in short steps(memories from 60 years ago!)

The secret to sack racing is a small, sharp knife to slit open the bottom of the sack before the race.
