They actually discussed this model before expansion - every team would play the teams in their own conference twice and half of the teams from each of the other conferences once. This would have meant 16 games and every team would play every other team in a 2 year cycle. It certainly makes more sense to me.

However SANZAAR put the current model in place in anticipation of future expansion. If that's the case I would say worry about it if/when it happens rather than screwing things up now.

Have you seen the way that Super Rugby works? The NFL is simple in comparison!

I agree. Gid rid of the conferences. Everyone plays each other once. Top 8 finals.
No local derbies or rivalries? No probs thats what the NRC, Currie Cup and ITM Cup can provide. Super Rugby is about getting to see and play the best players in the southern hemisphere. Use the 3rd tier comps to build up derbies. Advertise each comp accordingly. Too simple to ever work though.

If we were to dump the saffas and make it 5 NZ teams , 5 Aussie teams The japs, and a Singapore or Hongkong team and say 3 Pacific Island teams in 3 conferences..Not sure what the laws would be regarding the PIs fielding national teams .. Like Tonga , Manu Samoa, Fiji, ... Just throwing it out there The Singapore team could be local or they could invite down a minnow rugby team like Romaina, Goergia or the likes and base it there with maybe a change each yr.. but the team players home games in Singapore.. Singaporeans love rugby or do we promote rugby in Malaysia as they have a few local comps This is just a thought and the SE Asian countries love rugby

The place that loves their rugby is Sri Lanka, unfortunately it's mainly at school level- and I can't see them bringing any victories or much revenue either.

Their Brady Shield stuff on youtube is pretty cool though.

Australian teams suffered from not gaining points because of the number of Kiwi teams we played. It is fair to say that the Kiwis were the better teams on the park, but the country is broke, I don't think their tv networks will be able to cover for the fact that Fox won't pay for no aussie teams to play finals.

Well gigs use some of your fact finding skills as a teacher to find out the facts before getting emotionally attached to the dislike of kiwis and there attitude on he field and in business
After watching 7 periods of MR Gormsby I can understand your attitude towards Kiwis as a teacher

re: Laws, Argentina already field a virtually international team in Super Rugby, so I can't see that having the Samoa national team being the samoa Super Rugby II Team would be an issue

Amid concern about the future direction of Super Rugby, South Africa has emerged as the driving force for change. But whether any revamp of the competition structure results in the scrapping of one of Australia’s five teams remains to be seen.

SANZAAR held an executive meeting in Sydney over the past two days, involving 80 stakeholders, to discuss where the competition was headed.

Consultants Accenture gave an update on their strategic review.

Super Rugby’s expansion to 18 teams, bringing in Argentina, Japan and a sixth South African side, has created confusion for fans, who have found it difficult to follow the multi-conference, multi-group format. But it is understood South Africa is particularly concerned after being divided into two conferences, which include the Argentinian Jaguares in one and the Japanese Sunwolves in the other.

The tyranny of distance has always been an issue for South Africa since Super Rugby kicked off following the introduction of professionalism in 1996.

Sources close to SANZAAR have told The Australian that the South Africans would prefer to revert to a 15-team competition without Argentina, Japan and even one of their own franchises.

It was South Africa’s insistence on the inclusion of the Port Elizabeth-based Kings to promote black rugby that contributed to the expansion of the competition.

Oh so it's , we want the kings but we don't want japan and argentina because, boohoo, we don't like the travel.
We want it the way it was before
Welcome to the world of the western force you bunch of limp dicks.
There's no way they are going to get rid of the Argies and Japan.
So they're still going to have to travel regardless.
Australia might, and it's a very slight might, get rid of one team and replace them with either japan or argentina but they won't get rid of two teams. The kiwi's won't want to get rid of any of their teams at all.
    So what's the solution?
