I think this week spells more trouble for our lineout. With Etzebeth and De jager there we have a mountain to climb.

Hopefully there will be as much disorganisation in the Boks ranks as there is in ours.

Whoever loses this one will be deservingly crucified afterwards, I'm not entirely confident that will be South Africa at this moment in time.

Mumm, Hodge in for Wallabies

Mumm will start at No.6 with Fardy dropping out of the squad entirely in a massive selection call by Cheika for the Suncorp Stadium clash.

The 32-year-old stole more lineouts than any other player, save for New Zealand's Kieran Read and Brodie Retallick, at last year's World Cup.

Mumm also won seven lineouts coming off the bench in last month's two Bledisloe Cup defeats - twice as many as the next best Australian, with the team's success rate at just 69 per cent so far in the Rugby Championship.

His inclusion is one of just two changes to the team that lost 29-9 to the All Blacks in Wellington, with Reece Hodge also coming in for Adam Ashley-Cooper, who has returned to his club in France.

Hodge - who made his Test debut off the bench in that match - will play on the left wing with Dane Haylett-Petty switching over to the right.

The rest of the side remains untouched, with Cheika continuing to resist calls to move Israel Folau to the centres or to dump the hotly-debated Michael Hooper-David Pocock combination.

But there is further intrigue on a nine-man bench, which will be trimmed back by one after Friday's captain's run.

Both Lopeti Timani and Sean McMahon have been named, along with veteran winger Drew Mitchell, who is in line to play his first match in several months.

However, Mitchell could be the more likely to be culled after the Springboks went for a 6-2 split of forwards and backs when they unveiled their team on Thursday morning.

The uncapped Timani, who can also play in the second row, is widely seen as Australia's best option for a traditional, ball-running No.8.

McMahon, meanwhile, hasn't played for the Wallabies since June's three-Test series against England, when he replaced the injured Pocock at the back of the scrum.

Shame Dane keeps getting the blame for the four guys inside him not sliding out to pressure the ball leaving him with 4 on one to defend.

Personally, I think Cheika's confidence in his plan is the biggest problem with the Wallabies at the moment. He plays Pocock out of position so he can name Hooper, but neither of them are having any impact.

I would actually be OK with having Timani in at 8 if Pocock was 7 and Fardy (or somebody similar) was at 6. Mumm at 6 is wallpaper for the cracks.

As for the backline, it is telling when things that Rod Kafer say start to sound like they're making sense. Folau at 12 and Hodge at 13 would get Dane back into fullback, we could throw some real wingers onto the edges (Morahan for speed, Speight for power), or play Drew Mitchell there, because he's got the experience.

Must have been some row between Chieks & Fardy given he was a fixture in the #6 in a previous life. Mumm is purely there to stop the line out rot but let's see firstly if he does that, but what the rest of the game plan is ... does Mumm play the tight role allowing Pooper to get about ?
If we see Hoops seagulling again & auditioning for a centre shirt then the plan has gone spiralling downward immediately. A balanced back row can work regardless of individual positions. Hoops is the weak link, not playing in part IMHO in that balance. McMahon can bring balance but whether that's at 8 or 7 remains to be seen ... looking forward to seeing the Boks eye their chances ...

Re McMahon, I don't see him as the solution to Hooper Kev, they play too similar a style.

I think the problem is that they are focusing on having an attacking 7 at the cost of virtually everything else, both Hooper and McMahon are exactly that. Pocock is forced to play a lone hand at the breakdown, Fardy pinch hits when he can (unless he's dropped because neither Hooper nor Pocock are credible jumping options and Fards can't do EVERYTHING)

Once you get rid of the seagulling, defensively absent, Glory-first-and-leave-the-hard-work-to-others number 7 (regardless of the name) the solution becomes really easy.

Solid around the park with a bit of breakdown pressure and a meaningful lineout option in 6

the problems are solved, Fardy can play the 6 role, with any one of a number of blokes lining up to play 8.

Imagine having Timani at 6 and Pocock at 7, you could put any one of about 6 people into 8 (including possibly Fardy)

Hooper has to go, Pocock has to play 7, with a backup of the bloke who looks most like Pocock.

The bloke who should be 5 tests into his career as Wallabies 8 is Jed Holloway. Unfortunately he won't be back from injury for another 4-6 weeks.

Still think Moore has past his use by date. At 37 yrs old, i can't see him being around for the next World Cup as he is already in decline. I like the lock pairing, hopefully they call the correct lineouts for the situation and the throw gets to them. Without Holloway in the mix for the 8 jersey we are light on for genuine world class loose forwards. Timani is not a solution for 8. He is an undersized lock with average lineout ability, another selection by media. For Dean Mumm re Moore.
Genia and Cooper would be so much better under McKenzie, a coach who knows how to use them properly. Would have liked to see Hodge or Godwin at 12. We need a straight running, hard tackling 12 with just enough ability to make a play if need be. Folau is a no brainer at 13. That cannot be any more obvious than fire is hot. Morahan on the right wing, Naiyarovoro on the left wing and DHP at fullback.
Alaalatoa, Robertson, Ready, Skelton, Staniforth, Prior, Foley, Kerevi is the bench we should be looking at.

This is a bloody big match for Cheika, so many people calling for an end to the Pooper, Issy in at 13 and DHP at fullback - and he has ignored it all. If the problems persist he will deserve (and receive) a massive amount of flak.

Exactly, there is absolutely no justification in picking Mitchell on the bench. What are we going to gain from that selection. Would be more to gain from picking Morahan, Speight or even Khunt or the ranga from NSW
