Perth Spirit 2016 NRC season preview


It’s back!! Let us repeat that…IT’S BACK! NRC 2016 and the mighty Property Powerhouse Perth Spirit!

The local Perth rugby competition wrapped up over the weekend, allowing rugby fans to shift their complete focus onto the Perth Spirit, and the opening game of the competition to be played at home (UWA Sports Park).

With the scoring system being adjusted to run in a 6-2-2-2 format (6 point tries and all kicks worth 2) expect to see plenty of attacking rugby being played throughout the competition. We should also see a reduction in the fear of infringing in the defensive 22 – allowing for more set piece attack platforms being set in these areas of the field as teams push for tries.

The Perth Spirit has spent the last 2 seasons playing fantastic rugby in some matches and battling for consistency in others, and this possibly stems from playing a largely settled squad in 2014 and the biggest squad in the 2015 competition – travelling with certain players and rotating others from match to match.

This season sees another quality squad coming together.

COACHING GROUP:
2016 sees the 3rd coach in as many seasons taking the helm at the Spirit. Dwayne Nestor is the head coach taking over from Tai McIsaac as he cut short his 3yr deal at the close of the 2015 competition.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves - brilliant is a stretch.
But at least attempt to promote the hell out of it.

I was very hesitant in naming a potential 15, as the depth in certain positions is very good.

I'm not fully up to speed with a few of the local players as have been following my club on Saturdays.
Please make suggestions or comments about the local lads.
I'm aware a couple lads of gone east - Brad Lacey to Brisbane City, Albert Nikoro to the Rams, Kyle Godwin to NSW country.
If anyone is aware of Ngaruhe Jones - Perth Bayswater and a couple weeks at Paly this season headed east and after 3 months in the Sydney Comp has been selected in the Rams squad as a Lock/8.

If anyone has any further or positive info, please let me know.
The idea is about promoting Perth Spirit and the local Perth Rugby scene.

Is Masirewa fit for Saturday's game after injury on the weekend looked like an ankle(?) Would be great to see how Meakes goes if he plays.

Watching the NZ style of play a little more closely the last 2 seasons.
Hold out defensively for awhile when needed. Don't waste too much energy, give away the 3 at super or test level.
Get the reset in half way. Back your ability to score 5.
Don't fear loss, play to win.

Well I am fairly sure that yellow cards will be distributed accordingly, which would avoid the penaltyfest.

TRIES GALORE WITH 2016 BUILDCORP NRC RULE CHANGES

The Perth Spirit kick off the 2016 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) on Saturday morning against the Melbourne Rising and the two sides will be the first play with a number of new rule variations introduced for the third instalment of the state-based tournament.

Over the past two seasons the Buildcorp NRC has seen some exciting fast paced rugby and with a range of rule changes designed to speed up the game this year’s competition promises to be the most exciting yet.

Tries will be more valuable than ever before with major scores to be worth six points this season and any form of goal all worth two points, shifting from previous years where tries were worth five, conversions three and penalties two.

The pressure will be on the kickers as well with time limits to be placed on penalty and conversion attempts. Penalties must be taken within 45 seconds from the tee arriving to the kicker while conversion attempts must be taken within 60 seconds of the try being scored.

The rules around not straight in the lineout, scrum and the quick tap will also be tweaked in order to speed up the pace of the game.

In the lineout if the non-throwing team elects not to contest the lineout then the referee will give leeway on the straightness of the throw.

A 30-second time limit will be placed on the setting of the scrum, while quick taps must still be taken from behind the mark but can be taken from an approximately two-metre-squared area behind the mark.

Get down to McGillivray Oval on Saturday, 27 August to see these new rules changes in action when the Perth Spirit take on the Melbourne Rising at 11:00AM in what is set to be an explosive, fast-paced 80-minutes of rugby.

2016 Buildcorp NRC Rules Variations:
Scoring – Tries (six points), penalties/conversions/ drop goals (two points)
Conversions – 60 second time limit from when try is awarded.
Penalty Kicks – 45 second time limit from when tee arrives.
Quick Throw – Quick lineouts can be taken even if the ball touches something.
Quick Tap – Quick taps can be taken from an approximately 2m x 2m area behind the mark.
Scrum – 30 second time limit to set a scrum and defending scrumhalves must not touch the scrum.
Maul – If the maul has momentum then opposition must legally stop it.
Lineout – Relaxation of the not straight rule if no there is not competition.
Ending the match - In the event of a penalty players to tap the ball before kicking it out if they want to finish the game.

If that was going to happen, it was last year when the penalties were reduced to 2 points. There was an increase in penalties, but the game still flowed much better with taps, line-outs and scrums instead of a two minute break. I doubt it will be much different this year, unless it finally sinks in that conceding the penalty just give the opposition a platform for the try.
