STATE’S BEST RECOGNISED AT RUGBYWA GRAND FINAL BREAKFAST

STATE’S BEST RECOGNISED AT RUGBYWA GRAND FINAL BREAKFAST

By Fraser Smith on Fri 19th August 16 in Pindan Premier Grade, Pindan Senior Grade, Alcohol. Think Again. Women's Rugby

Nedlands scrumhalf Michael Ruru has been recognised as the 2016 PINDAN Premier Grade’s most outstanding player after receiving the PG Hampshire Award at the annual RugbyWA Grand Final Breakfast at Crown Perth this morning.

Ruru’s was the centrepiece for the Nedlands attack, playing at both scrumhalf and flyhalf throughout the season. His outstanding game management, explosive speed and a rocketing pass made him a menace to deal with across all areas of the park. His work on the attacking end saw him finish second in try scoring with 15, backed up by three doubles and two hat-tricks. He also finished ninth in total points scoring, an outstanding effort given he did not take a penalty shot or a conversion. Ruru will represent the Perth Spirit in the up and coming Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) season for a third consecutive season.

The PG Hampshire Award is voted upon by the RugbyWA referees round-by-round on a 3-2-1 basis, with Ruru claiming 22 points, finishing above runner-up Kalamunda’s Auega Seumanutafa (20 votes), Wests Scarborough’s Kane Koteka and AJ Alatimu (18 and 16 votes respectively).

Alatimu took out the ‘Top Point’s Scorer’ for a second consecutive year, scoring 215 points on the back of six tries, 58 conversions and 23 penalties. He was also selected alongside Ruru to represent the Perth Spirit in the 2016 NRC.

Nedlands winger Brody Lam took out the competitions ‘Top Try Scorer’, with an enormous 20 tries scored across 17 matches including three doubles, two hat-tricks and a four-try performance.

‘Coach of the Year’ went to West’s Scarborough’s Premier Grade coach Dwayne Grace for a second consecutive season, after leading his side to the minor premiership and consecutive grand final appearances. This, along with his role in the State Youth 7’s and the Aranmore College rugby program has earned him a coaching role with the Perth Spirit for the up and coming NRC season.

Wests Scarborough’s Sean Flatman was awarded the competitions ‘Most Improved Player’, who flourished after being moved from the back row to the second row. Flatman adjusted well to the change and was consistently one of the Boars’ best forwards.

The ‘Most Outstanding Colt’ was awarded to the Future Force Foundation’s Shambeckler Vui, who’s dynamic and explosive play in the front row lead to his selection in the Australian U20’s squad for the Junior World Championships in England. He has also been selected for the Perth Spirit for 2016.

Vesinia Taufa was awarded the ‘Women’s Best and Fairest’ after an outstanding season where she helped her Palmyra side reach the semi-finals. She also represented Western Australia at the Women’s National Tournament where her strong performances saw her selected in the Australian Women’s squad.

The Referee Award was received by Louis De Klerk, who showed outstanding on field performance during 2016, as well as contribution made off the field to the WA Referees’ Association and the development of referees.

Former Perth Bayswater and Wanneroo first grade coach Bill Watt was recognised for over 30 years of contribution with a Life Membership to RugbyWA. Watt was first played with the Perth Bayswater first grade side in 1980, and was a coach at the club from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. He was awarded life membership to the Perth Bayswater club before leaving for Wanneroo where he was a coach from the mid 90’s to early 2000’s, and was the vice president from 2005 to 2011.

Palmyra was crowned the 2016 Premiership Club Champions after a stellar season from their Premier Grade side who made the semi-final and claimed the RugbyWA Cup, with their Reserve Grade side set to play in Sunday’s grand final.

The Championship Club Champions was Southern Lions, whose Championship B side will face Rockingham in Saturday’s grand final.

Michael has been outstanding this season after having been consistently good over the past couple of years club rugby. But I reckon he showed real class and leadership in the 10s Comp. His game management and awareness of play was terrific. Well deserved. Now let's hope the RWA don't lose this one as well!
