    Please Explain

An incident occurred on the Rugby field last Saturday here in Sydney.

I am hoping that someone can provide an explanation, or some reference as to why it happened - or, some assistance in argument when this goes to the Judiciary.

The Match: Sydney Subbies Rugby, Third Division, Second Grade. Qualifying Final.

20 minutes in to second half

Match Stats - Penalty count 21-19, (10-9 second half) 3 Yellow cards and one Red)

After penalising the team with offside, Offending player was shown immediate Red. Offending Player had been on the field for one Minute. Play was on halfway line.

I throw myself at the mercy of the court.

Needs more info - what did the ref say at the time and what law is the player deemed to have breached?

Ummm, team red card for continued breaches? I don't know that such a thing even exists, but maybe something like that?

Was it a case of mistaken identity and the ref thought it was a second yellow?

Was it foul play that was penalised?

Ref stated red card for repeated offside infringements.

Sorry all, I wasn't at the match - This is all the information I have.

We have to attend Judiciary tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

I don't know whether That's even in the laws, but if you follow the logic that a team yellow goes to the bloke who happens to offend when the ref's patience gives out, and assume that two team yellows makes a red then it's logical.

I would expect the defense would be pretty easy at the judiciary. Your player was offside once in the game and got red carded for it, he can't get banned for that!

(unless of course they play cott or Neddies next week and he's a key performer for you )

The only other explanation than 2 yellows = a red is that maybe the player said something wildly inappropriate to the ref. Hartley copped a red after a warning from Wayne Barnes two odd years back.

    Back from the Judiciary.

Case was presented - Judiciary said that as there was no law that allowed for a red card after repeated infringements, particularly in the LAW 10-2 that was quoted on the charge sheet. There is no conviction recorded and player is free to play in the Grand Final this weekend.

Also - apparently, rumor is the Referee doesn't have an appointment for Grand Final weekend.

After a screw-up like that, I'd think the ref has to go for re-training

That's a sensible outcome. It appears that the ref was a bit whistle happy and trying to bend the laws to make it look like he wasn't the one at fault.
