Lance leads Force changes

Western Force playmaker Jono Lance returns from injury to start for the first time in nine games against the Cheetahs at Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein on Saturday night.

Lance was sidelined for 14 weeks after tearing his left shoulder pectoral muscle against the Brumbies in round three.

In other changes to the side that lost 27-22 to the Rebels before the month-long international break, Tetera Faulkner will start at tighthead prop, Gus Cottrell replaces the injured Ben McCalman at No.8, Ian Prior returns to scrum-half after deputising at fly-half when Lance and Peter Grant were injured and Junior Rasolea starts at outside centre.

The Force have three matches remaining and interim coach Dave Wessels said the team was looking forward to Saturday night’s challenge.

“We’ve got 240 minutes left in the season. We know that we’ve been really close to an outcome in our last few games. We’ve trained hard in the Test window to get the reward we want for all the months of hard work we’ve put in,” Wessels said.

Prop Pek Cowan will captain the side in the absence of Matt Hodgson, hooker Harry Scoble will earn his sixth Super Rugby cap while Faulkner will pack down at tighthead.

After making his Wallabies debut last weekend Adam Coleman joins Ross Haylett-Petty in the second row with Brynard Stander, Chris Alcock and Cottrell in the back three.

Prior will link with Lance in the halves for just the second time this season and Kyle Godwin will start at inside centre, partnering Rasolea who has been elevated from the bench.

The back three remains unchanged from the last outing with Luke Morahan and Marcel Brache on the wings and another returning Wallaby, Dane Haylett-Petty, at full-back.

Wessels said he was looking forward to having Lance back in the fold.

“Jono deserves a lot of credit for all the hard work he’s put in to get himself in such good physical shape after a long layoff,” he said.

“Both he and Peter Grant have trained extremely well over the last few weeks.”

FORCE SIDE NAMED FOR BATTLE IN BLOEMFONTEIN

The Western Force have announced their side to take on the Cheetahs at Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein on Saturday, 2 July with playmaker Jono Lance to start at flyhalf in his return from injury.

Lance returns to the fold following a 14-week stint on the sidelines after tearing his pectoral muscle against the Brumbies in Perth back in Round Three and after showing great commitment to his rehabilitation will return at full fitness slightly ahead of schedule.

In further changes to the side that ran out against the Rebels before the international break, Tetera Faulkner will start at tighthead, Angus Cottrell replaces the injured Ben McCalman in the No.8 jersey, Ian Prior steps in at scrumhalf while Junior Rasolea will run on at outside centre.

Interim Head Coach Dave Wessels said the team is looking forward to challenge the Cheetahs pose on Saturday night as the team strives to attack the last three weeks of the season.

Rounding out the starting pack, Brynard Stander and Chris Alcock will start at blindside and openside flanker respectively with Angus Cottrell at No.8.

In the halves Ian Prior will look to provide quality service and facilitate the Force attack when he links up with Jono Lance for just the second time this season. Wessels said he’s looking forward to seeing Lance back in the fold after an extended period of time on the sideline.

In midfield Kyle Godwin fills the No.12 jersey while Junior Rasolea has been elevated to the starting XV at outside centre.

Coleman returns to day job

Newly capped Wallaby Adam Coleman has put the excitement of his international debut behind him to concentrate on his “day job” when Western Force clash with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein tomorrow night.

“It was an experience I’ll never forget but that was last week and now I’ve got to focus on this week,” said the towering second-rower who made an impressive appearance from the bench in the 44-40 loss to England last weekend.

Coleman and winger Dane-Haylett Petty, who scored a try in the Sydney Test, have had a shorter build-up to the match at Free State Stadium, arriving on Monday in Johannesburg where the team is based before flying to Bloemfontein today.

Coleman, who is battling soreness and has been on a lighter training load, said he did not need the motivation of the England loss to get him through Saturday’s match.

“Playing is the only motivation you need. Motivation is always there,” he said.

“Each individual has their own reason for motivation but we have also got a personal point to prove in the next three games, not to anyone else, but to ourselves.”

The Force have won only two games in a poor season and face the Stormers at nib Stadium and the Brumbies in Canberra in the following two weeks.

Agree totally give the younger blokes a shot in the last 3 games, we have nothing to lose only gain by seeing whether they are up to preserving with. No Point the rest of this season trotting out players who are leaving or known to be not quite up to the standard required. We should be about developing now that the season is over so to speak, rather than doing the same old same old.

only one i wouldn't agree with is Koteka, he has been out, possibly for a different reason than not up to scratch.

If the rumour about Lacey leaving is true, don't you think they'd be shouted down for selecting him?

That one, specifically is a catch 22.
