Australia and England 2nd test 2016

Looks like Big dog could start on the weekend.
Tweaks likely as Wallaby beast awakens

By Vince Rugari - AAP on June 14, 2016, 3:04 pm

Michael Cheika could make as many as four changes to his Wallabies team as Tatafu Polota-Nau warns England have "woken up the beast" ahead of Saturday's second Test in Melbourne.

While injury has ruled out David Pocock (eye socket) and put chief lineout caller Rob Simmons (lower back) in grave doubt for the AAMI Park clash, further alterations to the midfield and front row might be on the cards as the Wallabies attempt to level the Cook Cup series.

Yet the biggest difference will be in Australia's attitude, now they've shaken off the cobwebs after seven months without a Test and had a taste of England's hardcore physicality, according to reserve hooker Polota-Nau.

"You see the true test of a person's character when they're down and out," Polota-Nau told reporters on Tuesday.

"People think we are but, at the end of the day, it's more so how we bounce back and reply to the situation.

"We're more than capable. If anything, they've woken up the beast.

"It's great. We can make sure that come training, we have no illusion that they're going to be physical."

Simmons sat out Tuesday's training session at Gosch's Paddock and appears to be at long odds to feature in the second Test.

Brumbies lock Sam Carter has emerged as his likely replacement, a move that would allow second-gamer Rory Arnold to play next to a familiar face and as part of an established second-row combination.

That is critical after England's control of the lineout in Brisbane, which coach Eddie Jones believes has "worried" the Wallabies and their skipper Stephen Moore.

Ben McCalman looms as the inclusion for Pocock, with the need for more size and power in the scrum and to counter England's No.8 Billy Vunipola in the loose likely to lead Cheika to pick a traditional No.8 rather than another fetcher in his back row.

Workhorse McCalman was one of the unheralded stars of Australia's World Cup campaign after helping stave off Wales and Scotland with desperate, heroic performances.

The need for a greater physical edge could result in Sekope Kepu starting in place of Greg Holmes in the front row.

But Cheika is also contemplating a different centre pairing, despite Samu Kerevi's impressive but interrupted debut at No.12.

Matt Toomua is in camp, having fully recovered from knee surgery six weeks ago, and while he is a quality ball-playing option plus a strong, abrasive tackler, he would be a huge gamble given his lack of recent game time.

The other leading contender, Christian Lealiifano, believes the big-bodied Kerevi-Kuridrani combination is worth persisting with.

"I thought they went really, really well. With a bit more ball, hopefully they can do a bit more damage," said Lealiifano, who came off the bench early in the first Test to replace the concussed Rob Horne.

The Wallabies have the day off training on Wednesday but Cheika is due to name his team early on Thursday.

Simmons out is a big one for us. Line out went to poo once he went off. Would have thought sio/slipper change in the front row was the more obvious one.

Cheika shakes up Wallaby forward pack

    By Vince Rugari
    AAP on June 15, 2016, 4:32 pm

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has given his forward pack an almighty shake-up, dropping Scott Sio from his squad altogether and making three other changes for Saturday's crucial second Test against England.

Cheika has also decided not to replace injured star David Pocock (fractured eye socket) with a traditional No.8, instead handing Melbourne Rebels flanker Sean McMahon a start in what shapes as the biggest challenge of his burgeoning international career.

The backline from last week's series-opening 39-28 defeat to England has been kept entirely in tact, with Israel Folau still at fullback and Samu Kerevi at No.12 after an impressive debut.

But Cheika has swapped both of his props, sensationally axing Sio - one of Australia's stars at last year's World Cup - in the process.

Loosehead James Slipper will now go head-to-head with England's Dan Cole, who has been in the gun of former Wallaby identities Bob Dwyer and Phil Kearns this week for alleged illegal scrum tactics.

Regardless of the 'angling in' debate, Cole certainly had the better of Sio, who was yellow carded in the second half of the Brisbane Test for repeated infringements - but to remove him from the matchday squad is a surprising decision from Cheika.

Sekope Kepu has also been promoted, with Greg Holmes on an extended bench alongside Rebels prop Toby Smith, who is capped three times at Test level.

Experienced lock Rob Simmons (lower back) has been ruled out through injury with Sam Carter to join Brumbies teammate Rory Arnold in the second row as expected, ensuring the Wallabies have some semblance of continuity at the line-out.

Five-Test fetcher McMahon, meanwhile, has never played at No.8 before - for his province or his country - and is a whopping 26kg lighter than his English counterpart Billy Vunipola.

But Cheika clearly believes his manic workrate makes him a better starting option than Ben McCalman or Wycliff Palu, both of whom are listed among the reserves.

Cheika will narrow down his bench on Friday with Palu, Liam Gill and James Horwill most in danger of dropping out.

Australia must win at AAMI Park to keep the three-Test Cook Cup series alive.

Wallabies: Israel Folau, Dane Haylett-Petty, Tevita Kuridrani, Samu Kerevi, Rob Horne, Bernard Foley, Nick Phipps, Sean McMahon, Michael Hooper, Scott Fardy, Rory Arnold, Sam Carter, Sekope Kepu, Stephen Moore (c), James Slipper. Reserves (three to be omitted on Friday): Tatafu Polota-Nau, Toby Smith, Greg Holmes, Dean Mumm, James Horwill, Ben McCalman, Liam Gill, Wycliff Palu, Nick Frisby, Christian Lealiifano, Luke Morahan.

"... as Tatafu Polota-Nau warns England have "woken up the beast" ..."

I really can't stand big talk and fluff'n'bluster. The Wallabies were done in, and they were completely out-thought. Pull your head in, concentrate on getting things right with your game-plan, structure and between your ears, then do your talking on the pitch, FFS.

The pooper is dead. Long live the pooper! Cheika has obviously nailed his colours to the mast there. Mobility seems the watchword for the wallaby pack these days. Carter and Arnold make some sense and hope the linocut is much better given Moore, fardy, Carter and Arnold are there, but carter has never really shone in gold.

Anyway if they cut down the penaties they'll win.

Ironic, isn't it...going for mobility in the pack against the coach that turned the Wallabies into a league scrum for the best part of a decade.

His unstructured, standing-start, one-out ball-runner ruck-play has become the staple and the bane of Australian rugby.

Hooper played as an extra back in the first test and hence was missing at the breakdown! Without Poey, that will have to change or there'll be more English tries!!!

Gill was/is the obvious choice for Pocock. (Just check the SR stats if you don't agree).
McMahon had little impact in his 13 minutes (4 carries for 3m only).
Hooper was too busy being a winger.

I expect to see little or no pressure on England's ball carriers in an effort to maintain the defensive line.
Focus will be on trying to support the Wallabies' ball carriers against the England onslaught.
It's not often we see the Wallabies offer only capitulation at the breakdown.

I have yet to gather my ruck stats from the 1st test but expect them to confirm that our Forwards were completely out-worked by the England Forwards. It seemed just like a re-run of the RWC Final against the ABs.

I don't have a good feeling about this series. 0:3 will be a hard pill to swallow.

not a kuridrani fan at all. would have rather see Kerevi move out 1 and Lealiifano come into 12 for extra playmaker.
