Force back to get run with Wallabies

Nick Taylor - The West Australian on June 9, 2016, 11:24 am

Western Force outside back Dane Haylett-Petty will make his Wallabies debut in the opening Test against England at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Haylett-Petty has had an outstanding season at full-back for the Force and has been selected on the right wing by coach Michael Cheika.

Cheika has named three debutants in his starting side Haylett-Petty, Brumbies second-rower Rory Arnold and Reds centre Samu Kerevi.

Standing 208cm Arnold, twin brother of the Force’s Richard Arnold, will be the tallest player to play for the Wallabies when he joins 60-Test veteran Rob Simmons in the second row.

Kerevi will start at inside centre next to Tevita Kuridrani as one of the biggest pairings ever named for the Wallabies.

Cheika has named one more potential Test debutant on the bench in Reds scrum-half Nick Frisby.

New dad Christian Leali'ifano has been named in the match day 23 for the first time since November 2014 after joining the squad in Brisbane yesterday following the birth of his son.

Newly re-signed Waratahs prop Sekope Kepu who has returned from French Top 14 club Bordeaux-Begles is on the reserves bench with alongside Harlequins second-rower and former Queensland Reds captain James Horwill.

Hooker Stephen Moore will play his 103rd Test when he leads the side for the 12th time, surpassing Stephen Larkham and Matt Giteau (both on 102 Test caps) to become the fourth-most capped Wallaby behind George Smith (111), Nathan Sharpe (116) and George Gregan (139).

Moore will have two vice-captains flanker Michael Hooper and winger Rob Horne.

Cheika said the team had an opportunity to build on foundations already in place from the World Cup.

"We have a good mix of new blood and players who have been connected to the group for some time and the energy and enjoyment within the group has been excellent,” Cheika said.

"The work ethic and application of every player in the squad shows just how much the Wallabies jersey means to each of them, and these 23 players know they represent the group when they run out on Saturday.”

Haylett-Petty spent several thousand dollars in pre-season putting himself through a month of specialist speed and power training at the EXOS centre in in Phoenix, Arizona.

Force coach Michael Foley described his selection as “brilliant”.

“Dane has earned his opportunity through an enormous amount of hard work,” Foley said.

“When you talk about hard work you immediately think about training with the team but Dane has gone over and above that and does a lot of work by himself.

“Dane is a shining example of someone who embraces the team and spends time mentoring young players.

He has come out of the WA rugby fraternity and fully deserves his selection.”

Wallabies: Scott Sio, Stephen Moore, Greg Holmes, Rory Arnold, Rob Simmons, Scott Fardy, Michael Hooper, David Pocock, Nick Phipps, Bernard Foley, Rob Horne, Samu Kerevi, Tevita Kuridrani, Dane Haylett-Petty, Israel Folau. Reserves: Tatafu Polota-Nau, James Slipper, Sekope Kepu, James Horwill, Dean Mumm, Sean McMahon, Nick Frisby, Christian Leali'ifano.

    Cheika backs unflappable Haylett-Petty

Vince Rugari - AAP on June 10, 2016, 5:09 am

Michael Cheika believes Wallabies debutant Dane Haylett-Petty has the temperament and the ability to make a seamless step up to the Test arena.

Western Force fullback Haylett-Petty has been selected on the wing for the opening clash of the three-Test series against England on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium, an opportunity that has opened up due to injuries to Henry Speight and Joe Tomane.

The 26-year-old has been a consistently strong performer in Super Rugby but now gets the chance to show he can play at a higher level, and from what Cheika's seen at training, that shouldn't been a problem.

"I like what he's got to offer as a footballer," he said.

"When I've seen him come into the camp and train with the lads, I feel like he's been right able to step up with the level and the speed of the game.

"He's attacking, he wants to make a break, he wants to take responsibility for the ball in the air, which I'm sure he'll see plenty of.

"He wants to get in there, he wants to jump in at first receiver, he's not carrying fear into the game and I like that. He's prepared to back himself and go the distance."

Haylett-Petty was born in Durban and grew up a diehard Springboks fan, but moved to Perth with his family for a fresh start when he was 10.

The arrival of the Force in 2005 ensured that perhaps unlike others who went before him, he wouldn't be lost to rugby - their development pathway meant Haylett-Petty, a talented junior sportsman, was able to stick with the code he grew up with instead of pursuing a career in cricket, hockey or AFL.

"I was lucky - as I was finishing school, the Force was coming in," he said.

"There was a bit more of a pathway there than the guys a bit older than me.

"I did that (national talent squad) and as I finished, I signed for the Force so I was able to progress onto that pathway and I think it's a good pathway through now, they've developed a lot of players like David Pocock, Digby Ioane, James O'Connor."
