i would hazard a guess that a chrome book would be just fine for your everyday use of browsing and emails. I would personally go for a lightweight linux laptop.

If all you want to do is run a browser and emails, then probably perfect.

I now have 4 Toshiba Chromebooks - one for each member of the family. IMO Toshiba's hardware is rock solid - there are other models but the Tosh has a 13" screen and I'm not a fan of Acer/HP etc but OTY. Tosh hardware combined a very slick linux based operating system = tick. If you're after a light, fast (boots in around 5 seconds) solid browser based (cloud) laptop with very long battery life, it's hard to beat for the money.

If you want to install lots of pc based programs like Micro$oft products and lots of bloatware, it's not for you (I use free google docs office products via my chromebook very successfully)

if you want a lightweight Linux OS, runs mostly like windows - i use Xubuntu, runs the xfce user interface.

I use LibreOffice for a MS word/excel replacement and have chrome/firefox installed as the borwser. Can't go wrong
