Small question is the ref suppose to keep score?
Is the ref suppose to mark the 5 m
Is the ref suppose to mark the 10 m
Because according to the the ref in the B grade all the above are not his job and are somebody's else's job .His exact words ?
    1. Yes - although some officials originating from South Africa have a tendency to delegate keeping the score to others. Noting, of course, that each team's team sheet usually has the score kept. Usually each one agrees with the other. 'tis only when they differ that the ref's scorecard should be consulted.

A combined question to Chertubler and Ecky.

By mark the 5M and 10M what do you mean?

I was thinking that chertubler was asking about stuff like a 5m scrum, doesn't the ref set the mark? Am I missing the point of the question?

The referee in the Pally vs Wanneroo 3rd grade game kept score himself but I've managed many a game where the Ref hasn't kept score. I assume it's the referee's prerogative?

I was thinking the question related to the offside lines: 10m at a lineout or PK/FK and 5m at a scrum. The question was if the ref marks the 5m or 10m. The answer is 'no'. The mark is where the set piece takes place. The offside lines are measured from that. There is no way the ref will mark those offside lines; it is more important to be where the infringement was.

As long as SOMEONE keeps score.
I always keep score, but I know not everyone does. It's quite common in Premier Grade for one of the ARs to keep score, rather than the ref.

If it was that, my call would be ARs, don't they usually monitor those lines at set piece?

Yes it is sad when brawn and a bit of biffo doesn't win out. You should watch a bit more lower grade rugby. Fitness and skills shouldn't play a role.

"Forget the ball, get on with the game" is the motto I subscribe to.

Yes, but accredited ARs are usually found in Premier and the occasional Reserve Grade. Not usually found in Champ B.

One should not reply on a clubbie on the sideline to mark these.

Funnily enough, all clubs were supposed to have arranged for a few clubbies to become accredited ARs, in which case you WOULD rely on them to mark offsides and report foul play, but very, very few clubs followed through with this request/requirement from RugbyWA.

Granted, and I accept the argument and the issues however, what would occur in such a situation? Surely having a clubbing from each side running the lines would be better than using the honour system.

Yep - the clubbie (without AR accreditation) is solely there to mark touch (ie where the ball went out) and adjudicate at shots at goal. Not to show where the 5m or 10m marks are, nor report on foul play etc. If they are good enough to mark the offside lines then the ref may well use them to do so, but I've yet to encounter one who can do it reliably.

...oh, and I meant rely on a clubbie; not reply on one

I thought the issue was related to local club rugby. When any of the local refs are good enough to referee Super Rugby or above then they can rely on the scoreboard etc. Meanwhile, they should keep the score at club level as per the Law Book's reference to "Duties of the Referee"

This is important especially when there is a disagreement between the two Team Sheets post match.
