Thinking this would be a good option for game of the round; I headed off to Forrestfield and immediately took advantage of a pretty good chilli chicken wrap. Far better menu than earlier in the season and tasty too. I needed to exorcise that Neddies burger tartare.

So the game of my round saw the resurgent reigning premiers take on a resurgent Kalamunda team very much playing like one team. The pace of the game was fast and furious from both sides with opening breaks from either side in the first few minutes,

Uni using simple wide hands to get round the D only to be covered by an irrepressible full back ensuring a home line out from which we saw the Kala break that resulted cleverly in a home side line out. The opening battles were going to be the tale of the game I felt with the vision of the Bulls half back and full back being the most influential on the game.

After getting into the Uni 22, the hosts wanted to stay there until points were seen. A prolonged camping in front their own clubhouse corner saw the in left winger bundled into touch several times before with the help of many others he eventually got bundled over for the Bulls opening score.

The desire and match taking intention was pretty evident and it wasn't easy to see how the scarfies were going to cope with it ... as long as the hosts could keep the intensity up.

After a foray into the host's half Uni came out with a penalty from one of several hundred penalties for offside throughout the whole game with creeping lines being caught out every time. Learn won't you players, a 5m gain turns into a 40m gain with the line out feed!

The first of a game with few scrums saw the Kala pack demolish the set piece to leave an 8 pick up to run over a half back with the back row tied in. Try number 2. An exchange of penalties in the remaining minutes of the first half saw a conclusion to a great opening 40 for Kala being 15 - 6 up with all the territory and the threat of a counter always present for any tactical kicking that didn’t hit the mark or find touch.

Uni started the second 40 clawing back the game with their own camping inside the Kala 22 but the only reward was a penalty attempt that hit the posts to a frenzied defence that eventually held its calm to get the clearance. A continued onslaught from Uni saw them string a few phases together that almost looked like a plan, but their simple handling wasn’t gaining ground or advantage with Kala defending the gain line zones to a point where yards was in the nett losses for the visitors. The Kala backline had their own advantage in a 70m interception try against the current run of play.

Kala defence was a patient defence without noticeable line speed but a consistent one waiting to pounce on any error or indecision forcing the reset from which they could contest the breakdown, there weren’t too many turnovers but enough to slow any half decent opposition ball to be used proactively.

One of those counters mentioned earlier, came in the final quarter with the full back in the first receiver slot working well with the scrum half to recover 80 odd metres in three phases all of quick recycling to enable a fantastic demonstration of rapid counter attack rewarding the hosts with the bonus point for try number four. Reaching a convincing reflection of the game the score had climbed to 25 – 6 with UWA throwing everything they had at a confident and remaining calm defence that had the audacity to mount another counter in the last play of the game, showing that they can play the full 80 minutes and with a pace that can compete with the two clubs above them.

Kalamunda have a tough run in for the four remaining games, playing Soaks, Pally & Cott all still needing points to secure finals rugby. These games are going to make for great contests and may well put them into candidature for a game of the round.
