    Rugby brawlers face assault charges

Two Queensland country rugby union players have been hit with criminal charges after an ugly post-match brawl on Anzac Day.

Police on Thursday charged the two men, one aged 19 and the other 22, with assault occasioning bodily harm over the wild brawl following the Rockhampton A-grade clash between Brothers and Colts.

The two players will appear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court on May 18.

But police have warned more of their teammates could join them before the court.

"Investigations are continuing with detectives closely reviewing the footage relating to other players who were involved in the altercation and have not ruled out further charges being preferred," said Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Moon.

"Violence of any kind will not be tolerated whether that be during a sporting match or otherwise, and players need to be aware that their on field actions can result in them being charged with criminal offences."

The Rockhampton Morning Bulletin has reported one player had his head stomped on, while the first punches were thrown as players were shaking hands after the game finished on Saturday afternoon.

Central Queensland Rugby Union president Ian Coombe witnessed the ugly scenes and said it was extremely disappointing, especially on Anzac Day.

"It was the most shocking incident I've ever seen in the years that I've been involved," Mr Coombe told the Bulletin.

"To say that I am disgusted would be an understatement."

The CQRU are also set to hand down suspensions to players involved.

    Qld rugby union brawlers suspended

A Queensland country rugby union player has been banned for three years and three more players have been suspended over an ugly post-match brawl on Anzac Day.

The suspensions were dished out after a phone hook-up between the players and the Brisbane-based Queensland Rugby Union judiciary panel on Monday night, more than a week after the Rockhampton A-grade clash between Brothers and Colts.

Three Colts players - including two already facing criminal charges - received bans of three years, 12 weeks, and 10 weeks, while a Brothers player was suspended for six weeks.

Both clubs have been suspended from the 2015 competition and have until Thursday to show-cause as to why they should be permitted to return this season.

One player reportedly had his head stomped on in the fight, which started when punches were thrown as players were shaking hands after the game.

Central Queensland Rugby Union president Ian Coombe, who witnessed the brawl, welcomed the suspensions handed down by the tribunal.

"The behaviour of everyone that day won't be tolerated and we certainly don't want to see it again," Mr Coombe told AAP.

Police last week charged two Colts players, aged 19 and 22, with assault occasioning bodily harm.

They are set to face the Rockhampton Magistrates Court on May 18.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Moon said investigations into the brawl were ongoing and more players could face court.
