Match of the Round: Palmyra (2) v Cottesloe (1) at Tompkins Park, Palmyra.
It is a top-of-the-table clash in Round Two of the Pindan Premier Grade when Palmyra hosts Cottesloe at Tompkins Park.

Both teams started their seasons with high-scoring affairs before last weekend’s competition bye with Palmyra defeating Wanneroo 53-17 and Cottesloe defeating Perth Bayswater 55-12.

Watch the match streamed live here.

It is the first match on home soil in 2015 for Palmyra who has made just the one change to their starting line-up with Va’a Mailei coming into outside centre and Chad Ramsay moving to the inside.

Cottesloe has made a number of changes in their backline with the Western Force’s Junior Rasolea starting at inside centre with Kelvin Smith moving to flyhalf. Nili Fielea earns his first start in 2015 on the wing with Shey Ellis moving to fullback. Urbain Lawrence also comes into the back row in the only change to the forwards.

Kalamunda (6) v Nedlands (7) at Hartfield Park, Forrestfield.
Kalamunda and Nedlands are chasing their first wins for the 2015 Pindan Premier Grade season and will battle it out at Hartfield Park in Round Two.

Neddies came away with a bonus point in their loss to Wests Scarborough and will be chasing a win to kick start their campaign for 2015. A solid eight minute effort after the siren showed they are very strong in attack and will be looking for a quick start against Kalamunda.

The Bulls took the fight to the final siren against Joondalup in Round One, taking home a consolation bonus point and will be looking to shut down the perennially strong Nedlands. They have named an unchanged line-up for the match.

Joondalup got their inaugural season of Pindan Premier Grade off to a flying start in Round One with a 22-17 victory over Kalamunda, however, Perth Bayswater will be looking to end the celebration when they host the newcomers at Pat O’Hara Reserve.

Perth Bayswater will need to shut down Joondalup inside centre James Wepener, who scored a hat-trick last round, and will need to lift in defence after conceding 55 points to Cottesloe.

It’s the first time on the road for the Brothers, who will be looking for a stronger start from the outset against ‘Baysie’ after trailing 17-7 at half-time last weekend against Kalamunda.

    Perth Bayswater: Not supplied
    Joondalup: Not supplied

Wanneroo (9) v Associates (4) at Kingsway Reserve, Madeley.
Wanneroo and Associates will go head-to-head at Kingsway Reserve, with the home side chasing its first win of the season.

Associates comfortably accounted for UWA, 22-5, in the opening round with centre Ammon Matuauto crossing for a brace and currently in fourth position, they’ll be chasing back-to-back victories to consolidate a top four spot.

It was a tough opening round clash for Wanneroo, defeated 53-17 by Palmyra, and they will be hoping their second match at Kingsway will reap a better result. Sylvanus Iro scored a double last round and will be chasing more points in the centres in front of his home crowd.

Not bothering to enter the team lists for the matches are either clubs hiding something or coaches that haven't got their act together. Increase the fine from a 100 dollars to 500 dollars with all proceeds kickstarting junior rep touring funds.

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

Stander would have been handy. Messy game in the rain but a win is a win.

Watched the Wests v Uni game yesterday which whilst a bit scrappy in parts, produced some good passages of play. Wests back line looked pretty sharp and could probably show the Force a thing or two about running lines, etc. Uni seemed to just hang in there courtesy of a very high penalty count and some excellent place kicking but on balance Wests probably deserved the points.

Did anybody see the Joondalup v Baysie game? Joondalup seemed to have hit the ground running on their first year in Premier grade.

I thought Wests left 20 points out there yesterday. Uni did hang tough but didn't really look like beating them. The West boys enjoy that move it from anywhere type of rugby but it won't work all season. Interesting to see Dickie Hardwick come off the bench for Uni ,apparently it's some kind of rotation policy that they are trying.
Wests actually got a couple of tightheads which I haven't seen for years. Pek running a scrumming session during the week was a big help. Robbie Nikora is getting more and more influential each week. Went good.

    COTTESLOE CLAIMS WIN OVER PALMYRA

Pindan Premier Grade – Round 2
Cottesloe 17 defeated Palmyra 3 at Tompkins Park, Alfred Cove
Nedlands 24 defeated Kalamunda 20 at Hartfield Park, Forrestfield
Wests Scarborough 23 defeated UWA 22 at Bennett Park, Doubleview
Associates 62 defeated Wanneroo 5 at Kingsway Reserve, Landsdale
Joondalup 47 defeated Perth Bayswater 0 at Pat O’Hara Reserve, Morley

    By Luke Worthington

A two-try performance by Cottesloe flanker Adrian Hall has inspired his side to a 17-3 win over Palmyra at Tompkins Park yesterday.

Cottesloe was able to dominate the opening half of the match, with scrumhalf Ryan Louwrens clearing the breakdown quickly, with tries to Hall and Mitchell Scott helping the Gulls to a 12-3 half-time lead.

The visitors had the wind behind them and maintained the vast majority of possession in the second half, with Hall crossing the line for his second to seal the game.

Cottesloe coach Ian Fowler said he knew Palmyra would be a tough fixture, but was happy with the way his team pulled through.

“We knew we were going to come and have a tough game,” he said. “They’re a good club and they go hard at it, so it’s good to get a win.

“It was hard to play into the wind, you can’t kick for territory so you just have to work it up the field.

“They defended well and it was just a lot of phases without really getting very far, but we got two tries into the wind and that made a big difference.

“Adrian Hall was pretty good, he got a couple tries, and the try just before half time was crucial to how to game went.

“The forward pack were really good. It was always going to be that way when it was windy and there was a bit of rain around, they maintained possession and controlled that.”

The strong wind at Tompkins Park played a crucial role in the match, with Palmyra taking advantage of the wind they had behind them scoring a penalty goal off flyhalf Johnny Aston.

However, Cottesloe was able to take control over the rest of the first half, and was rewarded for their early dominance on the ground when Hall crossed for the opening try of the match. The conversion attempt was missed, giving the Gulls a 5-3 lead.

Palmyra dominated the scrum throughout both the first half and the match, giving Cottesloe little opportunity to create any play off their set piece. However, Palmyra went unrewarded for their efforts at scrum time, as they were unable to contain Cottesloe’s running game and presence at the breakdown.

Fullback Mitchell Scott was able to break the line for Cottesloe, scoring a try directly under the posts to extend Cottesloe’s lead to 12-3 into the break.

Cottesloe continued their dominant running game into the second half but was denied by Palmyra’s scrambling defence.

Hall scored his second try of the day after some strong play by the Cottesloe forward pack to extend the lead to 17-3 late into the second half.

When the game reached the 80th minute Cottesloe were still attacking in the Palmyra 22, and left the ground as the clear winners, despite the low-scoring result.

In yesterday’s other results, Nedlands edged out Kalamunda, 24-20; Joondalup continued their winning ways with a 47-0 win over Perth Bayswater; Wests Scarborough took the narrowest of victories with a 23-22 win over UWA; and Associates were too strong for Wanneroo, 62-5.

Cottesloe 17 (Adrian Hall, Mitchell Scott tries; Kelvin Smith conversion) defeated Palmyra 3 (Johnny Aston penalty goal)

Joondalup won 47-6 not 47-0 FYI, two penalties early in the first half.

And yes, I was down there, was a good game. They also won in reserves showing some decent depth.

In saying that, Palmyra will be the true test in my opinion on what we can expect from them for the season.

Brothers are looking good, but they need depth in grades 1, 2, 3 & 4 not just 1 & 2 otherwise they'll encounter the same problems clubs like Wanneroo & Rocky have encountered. i.e a few injuries in Prems & reserves and towards the end of the season they've got guys playing top level rugby who are in their 40s and would look more at home in a local pub darts team. This is why Nedlands do so well, they get injuries, they can call on guys playing 5th grade who played state 5, 10 years ago and can still mix it with the big boys if need be.

Good to see they're not getting pumped in Prems though, hopefully if they can have a solid year, they can strengthen their lower grade sides.
