TV deal bails out Australian Rugby

The Australian Rugby Union will announce within about 60 days the details of a new broadcast deal that will alleviate much of the financial pain the sport has been suffering, according to ARU chief executive Bill Pulver.

As previously revealed in The Australian Financial Review, the ARU and its counterparts in New Zealand and South Africa are on the verge of a new television deal that should double the amount Australia receives for broadcasters to between $35 and $40 million annually for five years from 2016.

Sources have confirmed the deal will see Fox Sports Australia retain all live rights to Wallabies matches and Super Rugby, the competition which begun on the weekend. Network Ten will simulcast the Wallabies games and show one Super Rugby game on replay each weekend.

Yeah and their support is so strong, just over 20,000 in 30,000+ stadium for the first game of the reigning Champions only for half of them to walk out early en mass when the game seemed to get out of reach. At least they beat that pesky Sunday afternoon traffic in Sydney!!

Turning to the Tahs "fans" and singing "cheerio cheerio cheerio" at them as they filed out was gold.

At least this way they can watch from home and won't need to worry about traffic at all

Better than kick in the face but still way short of what is needed if we are to compete, contract wise, with the NH clubs.

Just to put it into perspective, I didn't think they would get that much of an increase.

With a maximum of 3 Australian games to show in what would be considered prime viewing times of course there will be no real increase.

The NRL and the AFL have 8 and 9 games to sell to broadcasters each weekend and hence massive TV deals.

Excellent news. The extra revenue is probably from UK anyway.

Yes, I know. What was your point?

Personally, I would reserve massive as a descriptor for the next EPL TV deal, supposedly $10B over 3 years.

TV networks pay for actual content (which was my point), they're not going to give fistfuls of money to the code with only 2 or 3 game they can televise at a decent hour. The casual viewers aren't like the people on this website who would sell their mother in law to watch a game of rugby.

I would describe the EPL TV deal as beyond massive!
