IT all started when the referee failed to turn up on time.
Soignies players will now wish he failed to turn up at all after the Belgian rugby club was on the wrong end of one of the most lopsided scorelines in sporting history: a 356-3 thrashing at the hands of Royal Kituro.
The BBC reports that Royal Kituro ran in a remarkable 56 tries and booted 38 conversions — scoring at more than four points per minute — to demolish their rivals in the top division clash.
Soignies did hit back — briefly — with a field goal.
According to the report, the referee’s no-show by kick-off prompted Soignies’ coach and several players to leave, only for the whistleblower to turn up an hour later.
They still took the field with 15 players but were dealt a hammering that president Guy Calomme described as “catastrophic”.
Incredibly, Soignies sits above Royal Kituro on the ladder even after the 356-3 humiliation.
