Match of the Round: Kalamunda (3) v Wests Scarborough (6) at Hartfield Park, Forrestfield
Last time they met: Wests Scarborough 35 defeated Kalamunda 17 at Bennett Park, Scarborough

Kalamunda will be looking to consolidate their place in the Pindan Premier Grade top four when they tackle Wests Scarborough in the Match of the Round at Hartfield Park on Saturday.

The Bulls will be chasing their third successive win – including last weekend’s 27-12 victory over a tough Perth Bayswater outfit – and will be aware that with the congested competition table, any slip-up could see them fall from the top four.

Wests Scarborough returns to the action following last weekend’s bye, with their last outing a heart-breaking 29-26 loss to Nedlands the week prior.

The Boars sit two points adrift fourth-placed Associates, and face three top four sides in their final six matches.

Kalamunda coach Josh Heke says he’s been pleased with the way his side has gone about their business.

“Our younger guys are getting more confident in the way they’re playing and we’ve got a bit of experience in the group too,” he said. “We’ve been fine-tuning things week by week and it’s starting to pay off.

“Wests are dangerous everywhere; they’ve got great flankers, good ball stealers, a backline with a lot of flair, so we have to focus on containing them and keeping their dangerous play to a minimum.

“The thing with the competition this year is that on their day any team can beat anyone else, and you saw that with Pally beating Wests, and Associates and UWA beating Cottesloe and Neddies last weekend. The thing is we know we can match it with the best and can put any team away, we just need to remain focused.”

Wests Scarborough coach Dwayne Grace says his side is ready to play following last weekend’s bye.

“The bye week was really good for us as we had a few injuries, so it was great for resting them up and getting their confidence up to play again,” he said.

“We need to take it game by game from here as we start to get into the nitty-gritty of the season. You can already see it’s going to be a tight battle to get into that top four, but we’re excited by the challenge and we’re looking forward to getting out there this weekend.

“Kalamunda are very hard to beat at home. They have a big pack but they’re very mobile. They get around the field well and they hit pretty hard, so we know it’s going to be a really physical battle.”

Wests Scarborough remain unchanged from the side that was narrowly defeated by Nedlands, while Kalamunda have made just once change with the inclusion of Nick Pearson in the second row.

Last time they met: Palmyra 24 defeated Associates 17 at Allen Park, Swanbourne

Palmyra continues their must-win run of matches when they host Associates on Saturday.

Palmyra (31 points) sits five points short of the top four, knowing that another loss could have a dire effect on their finals hopes.

Associates head to Tompkins Park full of confidence following last weekend’s emphatic 22-17 local derby win over Cottesloe, which allowed the Swanbourne club to climb into the top four.

Soaks have made several changes to their side for the weekend, with prop Afa Manukia and No.8 Brian Utumapu helping form a new-look forward pack, while flyhalf Chris Ashwin, winger Casper Nel and fullback Robbie Ingram are the changes in the backline.

UWA returns to McGillivray Oval this weekend following their emphatic 22-16 upset win over Nedlands at the Foreshore last Saturday.

The students are now breathing down the neck of the competition’s top four, knowing that a slip-up from Kalamunda or Associates could see them leapfrog into a box seat for finals qualification.

UWA claimed a comfortable 30-5 win in their last encounter, but Perth Bayswater has proven to be a very different side through the second half of the competition. While ‘Baysie’s’ finals flame may still have a faint flicker, regardless, they can still have a bearing on the make-up of the final four in the closing rounds of the competition.

Perth Bayswater will run out a new front row of Chris Kidd, Zinzan Ransfield and Adam Grant to face UWA. For the home side, Jeremy Smith comes in No.8 to cover for Richard Hardwick while Steve Chetkovich shifts in to the centres in place of James Wilson.
