PALMYRA RUGBY UNION CLUB CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY

There hasn't been a lot of positive talk about local rugby on this site in recent times so a little bit of good news (and selfless promotion)

This weeks match up between rivals Palmyra and Nedlands marks 80 years of fierce rivalry and mate ship

To Mark this occasion our Premier Grade will be playing in a heritage strip and here's the story behind it

In 1934 a small group of mates who all lived around the Palmyra area, decided they wanted to form a team and play Rugby Union. Our humble club on the vacant groun on the corner of Canning Highway and Stock Road in Melville. Being predominantly Fremantle Port workers, the boys only hd their blue work shirts as the first Pally Rugby Guernsey. Being at the height of the Great Depression, chocolate brown dye was the only choice of another club colour.

'The Blue & The Brown' has been worn with pride ever since!

To celebrate this great milestone we are having our annual Family Fun Day.

Which will sees are Juniors play from 8:30 with expresso coffee for $4 flowing into the normal Senior Grade Fixtures from 12:20. The highlight of the day however will be when our Golden Oldies side the Pally Pigs step out for their inaugural home game against the Shamboks under lights from 5:30.

On top of the great rugby we have face painting and a bouncy castle for the kids. We are also opening our refurbished grandstand and have an extended liquor license on the river side of the field. Once the games are finished head inside for a meal and let your hair down as we crank up the music and party until late!

Everyone's welcome at Tompkins Park - so head down and celebrate with us and our community as we celebrate this monumental milestone in Palmyra's history.

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

I'm still trying to find one from round 2 - I think that our match reporter is our good luck charm because every game he misses we lose

Thanks to all that came down on Saturday - It was the biggest crowd I have seen down at a home game for a long time with spectator numbers in the thousands across the entire day. A big thank you to the Neddies players and supporters who all stay afterwards, shared some old school stories and joined in the celebrations well into the night! (with over 200 people still in the clubrooms at 8pm!)

    Well done Pally.
New roof over the tiered seating and the electronic scoreboard = excellent work!

Had to leave fairly early in the evening unfortunately but it was already shaping up as a great night - good vibes all around.
