Lions and Divas take out the inaugural Beach Rugby tournament

Sounds like an awesome day had by all - Well done to the winners

    From Rugby WA Media

Rugby made its way onto the beach today in the inaugural Beach Rugby tournament at Scarborough Beach.

Twenty teams competed in the six-a-side tournament across the men’s and women’s tournament.

RugbyWA Manager Community Rugby, Andrew Hill, said the day was a huge success and he looked forward to making it an annual event.

“There was some great rugby played today and the most exciting thing about this was we were able to bring rugby to a whole new group of people that aren’t regular rugby players,” he said.

“It’s a unique opportunity to use what Western Australia is renowned for – the spectacular beaches – and with amount of participants and spectators here soaking up the atmosphere we know there is definitely an appetite for Beach and Sevens Rugby.

“With Rugby Sevens increasing in popularity as we build towards the 2016 Rio Olympics, we’re looking forward to running more events later this year and early next year, culminating in the Margaret River Sevens on the 22-23 February.”

Southern Lions has taken out the inaugural Men’s Beach Tournament undefeated in a tightly fought contest with the Bankwest Academy, running out victors 5-4.

The scores were level at the full-time whistle and the match went to extra time with Southern Lions taking the spoils as the first team to cross the try-line via Anare Koliavu.

Player of the Tournament, Richard Hardwick scored a try for the Academy and was joined on the try-scorers list by teammates Rob Ingram, Bruce Smith-Wright and Angus Taylor. Declan Pegum, Teegan Minkley, Johnny Tara and Ethan Bond-Williams scored Southern Lions tries during the main game.

The inaugural Women’s Beach Rugby tournament has been won by the Wanneroo Divas, defeating the Cott Chicks, 8-2 in the final.

Tay-a Antonievic and Atawhai Hohepa scored doubles while Anneka Taya, Sharnah Komene, Heketerangi Temapi and Shannon Baker-Collins crossed for a try each for the Divas.

It was a whitewash for the Divas, winning all four of their pool games to take home the Beach Club trophy undefeated.

Hohepa Styles from the Divas was named Women’s Player of the Tournament.
