    Game 1 – Monday, 7 October

    Under 14s
    North 10 defeated South 7

North has taken out the first match of the Under 14 State Championships, defeating South 10-7 at Curtin University.

Handling errors from both sides punctuated play in the early stages of the game but it was North who finally broke through when winger Nika Morehu fended off the South defence to dive over in the corner. Flyhalf Ethan Reilly made easy work of the tough angle, slotting the conversion to put his team ahead 7-0.

From the restart, South looked hungry and quickly capitalised on North’s ill-discipline with a quick tap-and-go to send big lock, Tom Norman, over the try line. Reece Anderson levelled the scores at 7-all leading into half-time with his conversion.

The second half saw the intensity lift with both teams defending hard and forcing errors which saw the scoring dry up.

It came down to the last kick of the game with Reilly’s successful penalty goal stealing the win for North.

    South 12 defeated North 10

South has drawn first blood in the Under 15s State Championships with a 12-10 victory over North.

The game kicked off at a blistering pace with both teams showing good attacking flair with South making the first line break after fullback Christopher Gale sliced through the defence before being pulled down by a desperate North tackler.

The first scoring opportunity went to South when open side flanker Angus Dickson crashed over from short range, taking the lead to 5-0 which they held into the half-time break.

A change at fullback saw Aiden Shortall send a well-placed kick into South’s 22 and the pressure paid off with outside centre Kade Pearce beating two defenders to score in the corner and even the scores.

South allowed North back into their red zone again with the forwards providing some space for Pearce again to crash through three would-be defenders for his second try of the day and take the lead 10-5.

South wouldn’t lie down though, building phases off the kick-off to work their way down field. The relentless forward-pack led by backrowers Tim Masibaka and Sosifa Likio kept the momentum in South’s favour and Bankwest Academy hooker Sy Waiti crashed over.

Jayden Hocking’s successful conversion claimed the 12-10 lead for South which they held until the final whistle.

On another Under 14's note, University play each year in an invitational tournament in Singapore, which happened over the last week. Mr North (his boy Issac is hooker) escorted the young fellas (poor kids)over there and I am happy to report they won the entire comp bringing home cup and the sheild for the first time ever. Some promising talent amongst the boys from what he tells me. Well done chaps

    Game 3 – Friday, 11 October

    Under 14s
    North 32 defeated South 0

North has won the 2013 Under 14 State Championships in a white wash, defeating South 32-0 in the final game at Edinburgh Oval.

North first points came via Ethan Reilly’s boot with a good strike in the windy conditions from 40 metres and they quickly extended the margin to 10-0 when Manaia Stockman-Te-Rahui broke the South defensive line and sped down the wing to dive over.

North’s second came from unrelenting pressure on the South defence to send Nika Morehu over. Reilly was again on target with the kick to give North the 17-0 lead into the half-time break.

The second half played out much like the first with the majority of play taking place in South territory as North continued to make the most of their possession.

Despite the score line, South didn’t drop their intensity, however, their ill-discipline and frustration gave North their first points of the half via a second penalty goal for Reilly.

North extended their lead to 27-0 after hard work and pressure on the South defensive line saw Jack Hardy switch the ball inside to Stockman-Te-Rahui who bagged his second. Reilly’s trusty boot slotted the conversion with ease.

The fourth and final try of the match came when North’s Dylan Van der Westhuizen took advantage of the space in front of him to sprint down the wing before the scrambling South defence pulled him down just before the line. Van der Westhuizen’s teammate, Jamie Bonner, took possession and dived over to finish off the play and seal the 32-0 victory.

    Under 15s
    North 20 defeated South 19

South is Under 15 State Champions after North was unable to claw back the 23-point championship lead in the third and final game.

North was first on the scoreboard when South were penalised at the breakdown and Aiden Shortall slotted the goal.

They lost the lead when South’s Chey Jon Hatu offloaded to Ben Syme who rebounded off the North defence and crashed over the line. Jayden Hocking kicked the tough conversion to put them ahead 7-3.

Before the half-time break, a try to Conrad Fisher and Shortall’s conversion put North back into the lead 10-7.

Following the break, North’s lead was extended further with another penalty goal but it was short-lived as Anthony Hondros broke the line and set up prop Soieli Vaituulala to score in the corner. Hocking slotted the conversion to put South ahead 14-13.

The lead changed for a fourth time when North sent the ball wide and Emgee Fourie dove over in the corner. Shortall kicked the conversion and North were ahead by six points.

South got themselves to within a point when Tamba Lebbie showed his pace as he sprinted down the wing to beat his man one-on-one but the conversion was missed, leaving the final score 20-19.
