    BANKWEST JUNIOR RUGBY GRAND FINALS

    EMIRATES WESTERN FORCE MEDIA RELEASE
    Wednesday, 4 September 2013

The Bankwest Junior Competition grand finals will commence this Saturday, 7 September at Edinburgh Ovals, Curtin University with five matches across the Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15 age groups.

The Under 16 grand final between Palmyra and Joondalup Blue will feature as the curtain raiser to the Rugby Championship match between the Wallabies and Argentina at Patersons Stadium on Saturday, 14 September.

Curtin Uni RUFC will host the finals this Saturday that will see five clubs represented over the five matches.

Wanneroo dominated the Under 13 and Under 14 grades, finishing minor premiers in all four competitions to contest the titles this weekend. Rockingham will also be looking to cap off a successful year with three teams competing in the Under 13 and Under 14 Gold premierships and Under 15’s. Joondalup Brothers, UWA and Southern Lions will be supporting one team each.

RugbyWA Manager Community Rugby, Andrew Hill says the grand finals reflect the growing nature of rugby in WA.

“Grand final time is always an exciting time of year and I’d encourage our rugby community to get along and have a look at some of the state’s rugby stars of the future,” he said.

“Wanneroo, Joondalup and Rockingham represent some of our bigger growth areas and junior bases in Perth and while the more traditional and established clubs will always be strong, it’s pleasing to see the hard work that has gone into developing these junior clubs is paying off.

“Saturday week also provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our Under 16’s – Palmyra and Joondalup Blue – to share the same pitch as the Wallabies, which is an opportunity I’m sure both sides will cherish.

“On behalf of the organisation, I’d like to wish all teams involved in Bankwest Junior Rugby grand finals the best of luck and congratulate the RugbyWA Juniors Executive and all our clubs on another successful season.

Congratulations to all teams who have made it through to contend the title and we look forward to seeing the RugbyWA community there to support the finalists.

Surprised Baysie didn't make the U/16 Grand Final. Paly and Baysie were the 2 hardest teams we faced this year at that age level. Joondalup and Mandurah were very good too but the other 2 were well coached and at another level.

Unfortunate, Baysie have had a couple of quiet years, there were some signs in the 18s this year that there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

The 16s is a team full of very good players so not sure what happen on the weekend but i know they will be very disapointed with the result not being able to back up their win in 2012.

Also doesnt help when you lose your best player and prob the best player at the club (juniors and seniors) to wannaroo.

Joondalup were much better on the field than Baysie on Saturday they have Lorenzo Mario back from injury and were playing well with their forwards. They do lack in the backs especially now that Jayden Maafu has relocated with Dad Salesi to the UK. The final will most probably be won by Pally. They are the best coached team in the competition and have the majority of state side players in the team.

Arguably the best player in his age group in Australia!!! Baysie's biggest loss, I'm ashamed that it was allowed to happen!!

    UNDER 15

Joondalup has taken home the U15 premiership, defeating Rockingham 21-5 today.

Joondalup took a 13-5 lead into the half-time break with Damian Darlington crossing for back-to-back tries while Rockingham’s Keelan Simpkins clawed back five points when he crossed for his side’s only try.

Conrad Fisher opened the second half account with his second penalty for the game and Matthew De Beer sealed the victory for Joondalup with his try.

Joondalup 21 (Damian Darlington 2, Matthew De Beer tries; Conrad Fisher 2 penalies) Rockingham 5 (Keelan Simpkins try)

    UNDER 14 SWAN

A powerful second half display has helped the Southern Lions to a 20-10 win over Wanneroo in their U14 Swan grand final.

With scores locked up at 10-all at the break, tries to prop Matias Codornui and outside centre Tony Raoren’s second for the day sealed the 10-point triumph for the Success-based club.

Southern Lions 20 (Tony Raoren 2; Matias Codornui, Daniel Tuimoala tries) Wanneroo 10 (Mitchell Douglas, William Tobin-Longly tries)

    UNDER 14 GOLD

The U14 gold premiership has been taken out by Wanneroo, defeating Rockingham 12-3 with both sides relentless in their defensive efforts.

Wanneroo opened the scoring with a try to Robert Francis in the first half before Wanneroo narrowed the gap to two points early in the second. A second try for the Roo Dogs via Nika Morehu which was converted by Ethan Reilly extended the lead to 12-3, the final result.

Wanneroo 12 (Robert Francis, Nika Morehu tries; Ethan Reilly conversion) defeated Rockingham 3 (Sam Clarke penalty)

    UNDER 13 SWAN

Wanneroo has claimed a nail-biting 24-17 extra-time win over UWA in their U13 Swan grand final.

Trailing 7-5 at the break, UWA levelled the scores at 17-all when outside centre Edric Laing crossed for his second try of the morning. However, continual pressure through the first term of extra time presented the opportunity for Roo Dogs hooker Caleb Reardon go over under the posts to secure the title.

Wanneroo 24 (Temeura Daniels, Harrison Mayberry, Emile Van der Merwe, Calen Reardon tries; Brodie Clark 2 conversions) defeated UWA 17 (Edric Laing 2; Lachlan Hardy 2 conversions, penalty)

    UNDER 13 GOLD

Wanneroo has capped off their undefeated 2013 season with a 55-0 victory over Rockingham in today’s U13 Gold grand final.

The Roo Dogs dominated possession and were ruthless in defence despite a gallant effort from Rockingham.

Wanneroo ran in 9 tries on the day with Jaylen Tuapola and Kewene McDonnell crossing for a brace while Tupuoronga Haene, Te Aroa Koiatu, Hohepa McDonnell-Kemp, Campbell Parata and Jaylen Grey scored a try each. Parata converted four tries and Koiatu slotted a conversion also.

Yes I think to end top of the ladder scoring a 100 points more during the season is dominating and therefor a deserved winner of the Grand Finals. Rockingham playing with 14 men was their own fault players were warned more than once that it is going to happen if they dont change their attitude.

That's kind of what I meant by my post as well, that Wanneroo had been dominant in the U13s and 14s (Gold and Swan) throughout the year. I wasn't at the finals to see what happened there anyway.
