I spent two weeks there January 2011 and if you are sensible you can have a great time.
drove from Jo'burg to Swaziland then down to Durb's, flew to PE and then drove to Cape Town.
Just make sure you have a good reliable car beware of animals and idiots on the road.
Then all the usual stuff at night stay in the right areas, dont flash the cash etc. to be honest the same rules apply to most places, definatly parts of the UK come to mind and a few in Perth now a days.

Of all the main cites, I'd say Cape Town probs safest. Durbs and JHB not so.
