    Women's Game in Perth

The Women's game is growing well in most parts of the world, and is receiving the credit is deserves.

I don't know if any of you watch the Women's 7's series, but these games are often just as fast and physical as the men's game. A credit to the development that the unions have been putting in.

Now I know RWA supports the women's game well, and we have a state team, but are the clubs doing anything to assist in this? Especially those that do not have a women's rugby Team.

There is no reason why the women's rugby teams have to come from only the Prem teams too, getting 10 teams together should currently be the biggest focus for this league.

Currently I believe the teams are:

    Arks
    Cottesloe
    Kalamunda
    Perth Bayswater
    Southern Lions
    Wanneroo

So what are the other teams doing about forming a women's team?

The easiest two surely should be the universities, UWA & Curtin, as they will have lots of women who partake in sport. Most universities in the Rugby world have a women's team.

Then look at the remaining Premier teams:

    Associates
    Nedlands
    Palmyra
    Rockingham
    Wests

And then the other possible contenders

    Mandurah
    Bunbury
    Joondalup
    Kwinana

Is there the drive to get these teams up and running, only four of these clubs are needed to make a Premiership all of their own.

Next what about when the games are played, the generally are at the same time as the 1st Grade. In other states I have refereed in, the womens games are on the 1st 15 pitch straight after 1st grade. This generally means they get extra support & participation, as well as being able to support their clubs own 1st team.

Seems the concept is fairly easy, what are we (Royal we, not just the TWF'ers) all doing to help it flourish though?

It would be great to see more women playing the game. From what I have observed and what I am told touch football is very popular which I would have thought would have increased numbers in union.

The challenge that parents face with girls who come from rugby mad families is that all their friends play netball basketball or something similar so peer pressure to fit in with those at school must play some part

IIRC Uni had a team a wee while ago. I think they had to join forces with Wests to get enough players on the park? Brendan the Barman was their coach at one stage.

Then they got beaten comfortably most weeks. That doesn't help to garner enthusiasm for the existing players or attract newies, I imagine.

No doubt he volunteered for the coaching role as well, he gets all the good jobs, that's the Brendan (aka Scrappa) we all know and love

There's 1 girl in the Kala women's team who has scored 39 tries this season. Hopefully there is some sort of talent recognition for higher honours after such a season.

I play touch rugby, was planning to join a women's rugby team until I realised there was no modified rules. Call me a wuss but I was scared of the size of some of the female players!

Have you been to watch any games Eley?

Much like the lads' version, there's all sorts of shapes and sizes that play. There are some, um, bigger-boned players but also some svelte fleet-footed ones. They can usually easily evade the others.

Go on - give it a go!

Given the volume that Eley can create as a spectator, I suspect a career as a coach might be forthcoming!

Roo Dog and Kala womens teams seem to be mainly Maori/Polynesian and hard as plus entertaining. Had one eye on Neddies/Cott game on Saturday and the other on the womens Wanaroo v Cott game next door
