    Rugby terms

Yesterday I made a comment about going into touch (Was permission granted Ecky?) and it made me wonder, why do we say 'into touch' when logic would suggest it is going 'out of touch' - ie play cannot continue and the players cannot touch it pending direction from the ref?

    From Wiki

"Touch is the area outside two touch-lines which define the sides of the playing area in a game of rugby football. As the touch-lines are not part of the playing area they are usually included as part of touch.

When a ball is "kicked into touch", it means that it has been kicked out of the playing area into the touch area. In American sports usage, the phrase "out of bounds" signifies the same as "touch."

The one that gets me is "Dummy" be it Dummy Pass, Dummy Runner, Dummy Half (in league) what the hell has Dummy got to do with rugby?

Making sense of some of the terminology and laws is clearly a futile objective as it is obvious our forefathers were in a pub, and had been for some time, when they invented this great game.

Maybe its derogatory term meaning you’re a “dummy” if you fall for this pass/runner?

Doesn’t quite cover the Dummy Half in League though. I’m just going to go with he is the only one in the team with half a brain so he is the dummy half as apposed to just a Dummy.

I always thought dummy kinda meant fake, or not real. Dummy half = not scrum half, dummy pass = fake pass, babys dummy = fake booby ...

Reminds me of explanation of cricket:

You're in (the pavilion) until you go out when you're in. Once you get out you come back in.

You remain out while you're not out, but when you're out you are no longer allowed to be out and must come in.
