Emirates may ditch Western Force naming rights

Emirates may ditch Western Force naming rights
    BY:BRET HARRIS From: The Australian May 22, 2013 12:00AM

THE Western Force is confident of retaining Emirates as a commercial partner even if the Dubai-based airline decides not to renew its naming rights sponsorship of the Super Rugby franchise.

The Force is currently in negotiations with Emirates, which has been the team's naming rights sponsor since it entered the Super Rugby competition in 2006.

"It's not black and white. We are still in on-going discussions," Force chief executive Mark Sinderberry said.

"I'm confident Emirates will be involved going forward, but the exact nature is still to be determined.

"The contract is up at the end of the year.

"We are in discussions about what's happening going forward. It's been a tremendous relationship for eight years. Both parties would like to continue it in some form or other."

If Emirates decides not to renew its naming rights sponsorship of the Force, it will be the second major sponsor of an Australian Super Rugby team not to re-commit, after HSBC announced it was ending its long relationship with the NSW Waratahs at the end of the year.

The Force has never reached the Super Rugby playoffs and is currently 14th with a 2-10-1 win-loss-draw record.

Meanwhile, Force number eight Richard Brown is expected to continue his career in Japan at the end of the season.

It is understood Brown has already reached an agreement with a Japanese club.

Nobody can criticise Browny's commitment to the team. I guess losing a Loosie of his calibre is the cost of having an awesome backrow. I suspect (if he does go) it will be a combination of not getting a gig with the Wallabies ahead of some real passengers and struggling for game time with four others who equally deserve a spot. It isn't like he's leaving the team in the lurch!

I hope he doesn't go, but thanks for all the hard work Brownie (actually thanks for that whether you leave or not)

And at least if Brownie is going, he's chasing the cash in Japan to boost his Super rather than joining another Aussie team to come back and play against us. Who knows, he may even do a Smith and come back if we have an injury crisis!

Whether Robbie Deans has been replaced by a coach who picks a team based on form rather than postcode?

Seems the naming rights sponsor is gone and the club is trying to hold on to them in some other fashion. Must be a bit of a worry for the ARU given that HSBC have also pulled the plug on the Waratahs after a long association and the $12m loss the ARU has recently posted. Management should cosy up to some resource company and get them to throw a tiny bit of their dirt money our way.

Mining entities already heavily involved, ET trading, Furgo, Airland Logistics ect and this Saturdays game dedidated to FIFO workers.

We had a similar story last time the contract was up, in the scheme of things we are only a small part of Emirates sponsorship and reducing us would not save them too much, but with new partnership with Qantas cannot seeing them breaking away now.

They have been good to us through tougher times I am sure like us faithful they too will remain so.

In regards Brownie, would be sad to see him go but he has given us his all over the past eight years a real stalwart. Cannot begrudge him a Japanese season especially with himn now likley to be off the wallabies radar. Thanks for everything Brownie.

my old man always said that the (old) Force backrow sounded like a legal firm:
    Hodgson Pocock and Brown.
(it works with Alcock just as well)

Browny is a great player, a great aspect of our team, and itll be a sad day when he decides to move on, hopefully its not until after we have our first trophy in cabinet.

With his signature on my trike... has the value of my trike gone up.. .I would much rather he stay with us however.. I still have to find out what the tattoo says under his arm..which he keeps as a very closely guarded secret..

As long as the new sponsor doesn't start with a T - the whole EWF/TWF thing is confusing enough as it is

8 seasons is a long time for a major sponsorship - and a foundation player. Thanks heaps to both.

FMG Western Force has a nice ring to it.

If Emirates stays as a secondary sponsorship are ch***leaders still off the agenda
