Melbourne Rebels coach Damien Hill will have to re-apply for his job after the club's board voted to open the position for next season.

Hill, who has won just six of 24 games in almost two years, has been informed he won't be offered a new contract. But he could yet maintain control if a suitable applicant can't be found.

The club will establish a panel of experts, including rugby heavyweights from outside the club, to conduct a local and international search.

It is unlikely the post will be filled before the end of the Super Rugby season, and a run of wins for the Rebels from their next match against the Crusaders could yet swing the panel in Hill's favour.

"Damien has been advised of the board's decision that his current contract will not be automatically extended," Rebels chief executive Steve Boland said.

"The board would welcome his application for the coaching role in 2014 and has indicated at this point in time he intends to do so.

"The Rebels welcome applications from Australia and internationally."

Boland won't be part of the selection process after informing the club he'll be resigning from his position in May.
An interim chief executive will be appointed with a new boss to be installed before the start of next season.
