    Historic match an opportunity: Foley

Western Force coach Michael Foley regards this weekend's historic clash with Super Rugby newcomers the Southern Kings as a rare and exciting opportunity for his new-look team.

The Force, who lost their season opener to Melbourne last week, are the first Super competition opponent for the Kings, who had an opening-round bye.

Most pundits expect the Perth-based side to play the role of party pooper at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium early on Sunday (AEDT).

However the Kings, who replaced perennial competition stragglers the Johannesburg-based Lions, will be driven on by emotion and expected packed stands.

"In numerous games that you play at provincial level, very few of them actually meet a Test match atmosphere," said Foley.

"The prospect of 40,000 or 50,000 people - it's a really exciting opportunity for a provincial team to be involved in the first match for a new side and a wonderful atmosphere."

Foley expects to have captain and flanker Matt Hodgson and fellow Wallabies Nick Cummins and Hugh McMeniman available after all missed the Melbourne game through injury.

While Foley has focused on developing the game style the Force unveiled against Melbourne, he said they'd checked out what they could of the Kings.

"We've seen them play a couple of trials," Foley said.

"They played a very big squad across those trials, two very different teams in those games.

"We thought that they played with an enormous amount of enthusiasm and a very high tempo.

"They've got some threats across the field, particularly out wide, with a couple of very quick wingers."

The Kings will be captained by former Springboks back-rower Luke Watson, one of the few widely recognised players at the fledgling franchise.

"We have experienced players like Bandise Maku and Andries Strauss who have played a lot of Super Rugby but, on the flip side, there are some who have not," Watson said.

"We all have to start somewhere and we have no doubt in the ability and commitment of those guys who will be pulling on a Super Rugby jersey for the first time."

Foley felt having the South African leg of the Force's campaign so early in the season could be a positive for his revamped squad, achieving a greater level of familiarity than if they were playing at home.

A bonus point is where we want to be.

Then off to Pretoria to snatch one from the Bulls as well.

That'll make up for tripping over our own toes in Melbourne!

28 hours to kick off. Has Foley announced the team sheet yet?

    Leaving it late, if not.

Three big guns in. Plus a 5/2 bench.

Force name strong side for Southern Kings

    Friday 22 February 2013

The Western Force have named captain Matt Hodgson, winger Nick Cummins and off-season recruit Hugh McMeniman in their Super Rugby team to face the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The three Wallaby representatives did not take part in last weekend's 30-23 loss to the Rebels in Melbourne, with Hodgson returning from a hamstring injury and McMeniman a late withdrawal from the side due to a pectoral strain.

Cummins started in Force A's 23-16 win over Rebel Rising, in his first appearance for the year after sustaining a knock to his knee during pre-season training and not participating in either of the side's trial matches.

Hodgson will become the eighth player in the Western Force's history to captain the side in Super Rugby and will run on at openside flanker replacing Chris Alcock, who will start as one of five forwards on the Western Australian bench.

McMeniman is set to make his first appearance in Super Rugby since his final season with the Queensland Reds in 2009. The 29-year-old will pack down alongside Sam Wykes in the second row, behind an unchanged front row of Pek Cowan, Nathan Charles and Tetera Faulkner.

Cummins represents the sole change to the Western Force backline that produced an impressive first-up performance in their maiden start together against the Rebels.

The Wallaby flyer replaces Pat Dellit on the right wing after Dellit was forced to return home with facial fractures and an ankle injury sustained against the Rebels. He is expected to be available for selection for the Force's Week Five match against the Reds in Brisbane.

Saturday night's match represents the Kings' first in Super Rugby after replacing the Lions in the South African conference. Western Force Head Coach Michael Foley said he was keen for his side to build on its performance against the Rebels.

"We're fortunate to be in a position to bring in Hodgo, Hugh and Nick for Saturday," he said. "Last week there were some promising signs that we're heading in the right direction. Our challenge is to continue to develop as a team and persevere with the style of game we've begun to play. We're looking forward to the challenge that awaits the side on Saturday night."

Tell you what I'm gonna start going to Force training more often cos Stanley must be doing some amazing things?

Think we will experience a bit more "try time" when Winston gets a bit more "pine time"

But then again, like I say to the missus.... "what the fuck would I know!"
