We know he's had contact with Dr Ferrari, because he admits it, but only the once, when he was identifying whether to move from BMX to road cycling.

He currently rides for BMC, which is managed by Jim Ochowicz, who is a good friend of Armstrong. And rode for T-Mobile when the team had Ulrich, Vinokourov and Botero, who are all either dopers or strongly suspected.

I agree. I sincerely hope Cadel's clean. But if he's not, it'll come out given all the dobbing that's gone on.

Oops, sorry, yes.

I reckon Cadel is about as clean a rider as you are going to get from that era of cycling; not just because of his personality but also his career path - he didn't make any great leaps forward in ability - he slowly improved with age.

Actually, I reckon his Tour win came from one of his less impressive rides in the Tour. The 2011 race was dominated by the battle between Contador and Andy Schleck, with them marking each other out of the race and Evans winning by being the next best rider. 2012 might have been a year too far - he is 35 now - and his best years were when he was 30/31, often the peak age for a stage race rider.

In 2007 Evans lost to a very young Contador. Contador was suspicious, as he was riding for Discovery Channel (the ex-US Doping Service) and such a young rider to excell in the tours. Also, Contador only inherited the lead when Rasmussen was thrown out of the race for (alledgely) lying about his whereabouts to the doping authorities.

In 2008 Evans lost out to Sastre. Sastre's winning margin was down to a single stage up Alpe d'Huez where he put in an unbelievable attack.+ Evans didn't follow Sastre as he was marking Sastre's team-mate, Frank Schleck (a doper) and Bernhard Kohl (another doper).

[+ By unbelievable, I mean an attack of such sustained speed that Pantani in his juiced-up prime would have had difficulty following him. Sastre then backed up his effort on subsequent days, something he usually failed to do at the Tour, although this may have been the Yellow Jersey effect.]

I tell you what though .. after all this has died down (and I think it has a very long long way to go) and when all the cheats are outed, disqualified, embarrased, shamed, if our own Cadel is still standing proud with his proven honest rides behind him, he'll be even more of an ambassador to the sport and for Australian Sport - kids will be looking at him and hopefully thinking, it can be done wihtout cheating!
