Sport definitely does run in cycles, especially with rugby with the World Cup, Lions Tours, European deals etc...

However teams can establish a good grounds to minimise the bottom of the cycle, i.e. the Crusaders and Bulls have done pretty well in recent times at replacing departing talent.. Similar case in other sports like the Brisbane Broncos and Collingwood.

The QRU of 2007/2008 was riding the coat tail of a very successful amateur era, the signs were starting to show in the early 2000's, the extra competition from the force at recruiting and retaining players just expedited the process and exposed fundamental flaws in the Reds program.

.......and some are just crap. Like the Tahs. Despite their massive player base, they are a continual dissappointment. Even when they get to finals and choke they are SHIT. They have been boring the arse off Australian Rugby supporters for years. Especially their own.

There will always be some clubs like the Tahs, Parra, Penrith(unsure of AFL equivalent) who have massive player bases but continually perform below expectations... In all these situations there have been issues identified at a administrative level which overflows into the coaching and player department.

It resembles seagulls fighting over chips on the beach.

Good one, except that usually one of the dominant seagulls eventually picks up the chip.
