    Burswood Stadium Capacity Announced

    The West Australian

    May 7, 2012, 2:37 pm

Premier Colin Barnett today announced that the new stadium at Burswood could be expanded to seat 80,000 and will be one of the longest grounds in Australia.

The field will be 165m long and 130m wide, making it 5m longer than the MCG and Patersons stadium, it will also have an east-west orientation.

The capacity of the stadium will be 60,000 initially but it will be designed to allow expansion in the future. The ultimate capacity could expand to 70,000 or even 80,000 by putting additional seating along the wings.

“The important thing about these announcements is that they form the foundation for all of the other design requirements for the stadium,” Mr Barnett said.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said these decisions were a result of consultation with sporting bodies combined with the State Government’s desire to achieve a “Fan First” outcome.

“One design innovation being considered is the inclusion of ‘field clubs’ - onfield hospitality facilities at ground level bringing the fans much closer to the action zone,” Mr Waldron said.
Mr Waldron said the project definition phase of the project was progressing well and he was expecting the report to Government to be completed by the middle of the year.

    Too right TiF!

They should build It for 80k from the get go. 60k will probably be too small by time the ground is completed in 2018

If the field is 5M longer than Subi Oval, will it make the new stadium even worse for viewing 'rectangular' sports??

That's exactly what I was thinking. 165m long pitch when a rugby field is only 100m...

I can't understand why they can't build a cheap rectangular stadium. There must be some standard designs. Just pour concrete in a step shape and bolt on some seats. Add steel cantilever roof. Doesn't have to be pretty, as long as we can see the game. The Force aren't exactly pretty, but we still watch them!

Can't see myself going to watch Wallabiese at that size stadium. Will need binoculars like Subi.
No mention of the retractable seating that was spoken about some time ago.

New stadium to have shorter field than Subiaco

The State Government has revealed Perth's new stadium will have a shorter playing field than Subiaco Oval.

The facility at Burswood will be 165 metres long and 130 metres wide, with an east- west orientation.

It will be built to house 60,000 seats but the Sports Minister Terry Waldron says it may eventually be expanded to an 80,000 capacity.

Mr Waldron says while Subiaco is 175 metres long, he is confident the new stadium will strike the right balance between the needs of players and fans.

"The Premier's always said that we'd like to get something looking at the way Etihad Stadium has been constructed so your fans are close in, you get a good view down," he said.

"With 175 that's probably not possible, it wouldn't be possible and also obviously, the bigger the stadium, the bigger the bowl, the bigger the cost."

I think that may be my fault.....ably assisted by Swee, Shasta, Elf and Jargan we shot holes in that idea very soundly.

To be frank, in any Australian stadium, confgurability is a complete waste of money, the priority stakeholder has, in every instance, blankly refused to change the configuration of 'their' stadium, despite any argument to do so. Added to that, moving the wings in to suit the pitch only ever changes the shape of the bowl and not the outer. Therefore, unless you're in the first 20 rows of a Wallabies match your seat is the same distance away anyway.
