Rugby chiefs ask for a please explain over Genia

The Australian Rugby Union is investigating the Will Genia recruiting debacle.

They are inquiring into whether the Queensland Reds broke Super Rugby protocols and have asked the club to explain how the embarrassing events unfolded.

Force management have also spoken to ARU officials.

Under ARU protocols, players must sign a club contract which is submitted to the ARU before any announcement can be made.

The Reds announced on Saturday that the Wallabies scrum-half had agreed to terms with the Force before he had signed a contract.

Genia then did a dramatic about-face and announced on Monday he was staying in Queensland. Reds coach Ewen McKenzie also said that Genia had signed the deal.

Queensland claim the Force leaked news of Genia's negotiations but Force chief executive Vern Reid denied the club had gone public.

"That clearly wasn't in our interests. They (Reds) have laid their plans out, they have enacted a plan. The net result appears that it may have been a successful ploy," he said.

An ARU spoken said "communications" with Super Rugby franchises were confidential until any outcome was finalised.

Meanwhile, the Force pack has been further depleted by the loss of Wallabies back-rower Ben McCalman with a shoulder injury for their two-games in South Africa.

They have already lost second row Sam Wykes (knee reconstruction), flanker Angus Cottrell (dislocated elbow) and prop Kieran Longbottom (neck surgery) for the rest of the season.

Flanker Lachlan McCaffrey, second-rower Jake Ball and outside back Tyrone Lefau have been called into the squad.

Ball, who plays for Palmyra in the local competition, signed a short-term contract yesterday. Lefau, also on a short-term contract, was a Chiefs development squad member and impressed for the Force A before he was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

So they should......of course it'll come to nothing 'for the good of Aussie rugby' but at least somebody is asking questions!

I think, unfortunately, that Genia will be off to France after this.

Ahh well. If he wants to be a pirate then so be it. We'll have someone in a wallabies jumper who wants to play instead of just get paid
