IRB Pacific Rugby Cup - guess who misses out again?

The IRB Pacific Rugby Cup kicks off on February 24 when Fiji Warriors, Samoa A and Tonga A travel to Australia for the first round of matches against Super Rugby development opposition.

The Australia leg comprises nine matches played from February 24 to March 5 between the Islanders and Australia based teams the Brumby Runners, the Junior Waratahs and Queensland A.

Holders Fiji Warriors, Samoa A and Tonga A then travel to New Zealand for the second round of nine matches from March 9-19, where they face, in a change from last year, all five of the New Zealand Super Rugby development teams the Crusader Knights, Chiefs Development, Hurricanes Development, Highlanders Development and Blues Development teams.

ARU High Performance Unit Manager, David Nucifora, said the second annual IRB Pacific Rugby Cup provided Australian FxPro Super Rugby sides a chance to provide elite Rugby experiences for the back end of their squads, as well as providing game time for extended player squad and National Academy players.

"The Pacific Rugby Cup is an elite competition that provides our up-and-coming stars with a chance to show off their skills against international opponents," Nucifora said.

"The importance of this competition and the development it provides for the rising ranks of Australian Rugby cannot be understated.

"These games have allowed the FxPro Super Rugby sides a chance to not only provide match experience for their contracted development players, but also access the National Academy players, who have been working under the ARU academy system for three months now and relish the exposure to game situations."
