    SA franchises reject mergers

Golden Lions Rugby Union president Kevin de Klerk has revealed that no South African Super Rugby franchise is interested in merging ahead of the Southern Kings' involvement in the 2013 competition.

De Klerk said representatives from all five South African franchises held a meeting on Thursday to find a solution to the problem created by the South African Rugby Union (SARU) whereby the Kings - who are the sixth franchise - have been guaranteed participation in next year's tournament.

How's the arrogance of the SARU though. They Didnt get their team in the competition for the 11 season. So they announce that they will have another team in the 2013 comp. knowing its in the middle of a broadcast agreement and without consultation with the two other SANZAR nations. If anyone else is going to get a team. It will probably be 2 teams from Argentina if they have the players. Because of the rugby championship (and I still hate that name. What's wrong with the 4N???)

I'm not a fan of that for several reason but, who knows, it's South Africa and they might end up doing it. Firstly what happens if a team finishes bottom of the South African conference in Super Rugby but finishes ahead of the incoming team in the Currie Cup? Secondly Currie Cup teams are not the same as the Super Rugby teams because of Springboks call ups so you're deciding promotion and relegation on the basis second-string line-ups - remember the Cheetahs won 3 Currie Cups while bombing out in Super Rugby. And thirdly, you see in soccer how teams get decimated when they're relegated as players want to play in the top competition - you end up with a cycle of perpetually weakened teams cycling in and out of the competition and who'd want to play for them?

Reality is that the five strongest Provinces are being represented and the Eastern Cape are not historically particularly strong at Provincial level.
Perhaps SARU need to look at what is best for the integrity of Super Rugby rather than political expediency...

Knowing the SARU they will probably merge the two cape franchises- eastern cape and western province. The team will be based out of Capetown because that's the biggest city in the region. And they will call it the Stormers. Problem solved.

They should just wait till 2015 and have a new SA team, new NZ team (another Auckland or the Hawkes Bay area) and a another team from somewhere else- Japan maybe.

    Let em in

    RSA has 6 teams

    super 16

    No byes

    no brainer

Each team plays the other once alternating visits every 2nd year

    less demanding on players

less lopsided competition with Aussie teams plaing each other twice (schoolboy games)

If you want more games, have a final 8 semi system

    Too easy

    Everybody is happy

    The conference system is flawed

i think that could be the go rex. i liked the rotating home/away games.
but we're still stuck in the position of re-negotiating a broadcast agreement halfway through

If man made it, man can break it...........ask Digby about contracts

The Africans will prefer factional dissension, bickering, politicking, b1tching, whining, backstabbing, boozing and pitch invasions

The solution is a bit complex for them

Watch them squabble and fark their rugby

Makes sense from a rugby point of view but it doesn't sound like that's gonna play at a political level.

Personally I think if they want to faff around with their conference and have 6 teams then let them - as long as it doesn't affect the other two countries (beyond missing out on playing an extra South African team each year obviously).

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said in an article today that it's unlikely there will be any new teams from Australia or NZ in 2016.

And once again it's come down to this...

South Africa's Super Rugby teams have threatened to boycott the competition in 2013 if any of them are excluded.

The teams have sent a letter to the South African Rugby Union (SARU) demanding the southern hemisphere championship expand its 2013 edition to 16 teams if South African officials insist on including new franchise Southern Kings, Rapport newspaper reported.

SARU president Oregan Hoskins said he would forward the letter to the nine other unions involved in the contest and that it "will be in the hands of all unions to decide which teams will play in the Super Rugby series".

How many players do you think we could source from Argentina and Asia? It's been time to call their bluff for about five years now!

I'm assuming if they do boycott, then whoever they sold the TV rights to would have a very good reason for demanding compensation from them.
