However, it might be worth remembering that if SA leave, we suddenly become the outlying team stuck 3500km or more from everyone and comprising the bulk of the competition travel budget. So, next up on the cost cutting block are.......

The worry would be that they might demand compensation from Australia and NZ as well for letting it happen.

Call their bluff. They won't walk away. There are too many legally binding contracts. Fox for one would sue the SARU

    Lions tipped for dreaded drop

Cape Town - The people have spoken: it is the Lions who are likeliest to disappear from Super Rugby if it cannot be expanded to accommodate the Southern Kings.

Some 6 000 Sport24 readers responded to our poll asking the topical question: “Which of the five South African Super Rugby franchises is ‘favourite’ for the wooden spoon in this year’s local conference?”

It is pertinent because, with negative sentiment coming from the other SANZAR partners around the possibility of swelling the competition somehow to 16 teams - thus six from South Africa - the last-placed SA team this year may be the one to make the costly sacrifice.

And our readers suggest the financially-troubled Lions, despite being Currie Cup champions, will be the ones to bring up the rear in the conference.

They earned 32% of “support” for the wooden spoon, fairly closely followed by the Cheetahs on 29%.

Africans won't take no for answer on expansion plan

AUSTRALIA and New Zealand have discovered that where SANZAR is concerned, South Africa are ever persistent, endlessly pushing their cause on and off the field.

Where rugby politics are concerned, South Africa never give in, as shown by their relentless pursuit of the Super Rugby tournament being expanded to a 16-team competition to avert the threat of relegation among their home provinces through the introduction of the Southern Kings next season.

Although their SANZAR partners keep telling them they have no hope of winning their argument, due to the current broadcasting agreement that stipulates a 15-team competition, South African officials keep gnawing away. Their latest ploy is for officials from several provinces, including the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Kings, to accompany South African Rugby Union delegates to Australia and New Zealand next month to lobby for another team.
