A severe weather warning has been issued for WA from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay for this evening.
The WA Bureau of Meteorology is also expecting widespread damaging winds, abnormally high tides and flash flooding for people living in the Perth metropolitan area, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Katanning and Albany.
BOM climate and weather information officer John Relf said a strong cold front is expected to begin its journey across the state at about 6pm, starting in Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste.
“Don’t be fooled by the blue sky, nature has a nasty little sting in its tail sometimes,” Mr Relf said.
“Basically people won’t notice a great deal until late this afternoon, evening time.
“People in WA’s southwest usually experience these conditions three or four times a year in a normal winter.”
Residents are being warned of dangerous gusts of wind in excess of 125km/h, which may cause significant damage to homes and property.
Widespread and powerful winds of up to 100km/h could result in damage to homes from Perth to Bremer Bay while heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause flash flooding.
Higher than normal tides are expected between Jurien Bay and Cape Leeuwin, which may cause flooding in low-lying coastal areas.
State Emergency Services have advised people to trim branches and store or weigh down loose objects around the home, also to clear gutters and downpipes to prevent flooding.
Residents are also advised to prepare an emergency kit with a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and a first aid kit.
The worst of the storm is expected to pass in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
