SUBIACO Mayor Heather Henderson said the City gave its best shot to promote Kitchener Park as the location for a new football stadium.
Mrs Henderson she would also support plans to change Subiaco Oval into a rectangular shape to accommodate rugby league, rugby union and soccer.
“We still think there is a lot of water to go under the bridge and a lot of question marks related to the whole development so we will just watch the space and keep our eye on the ball game,” Mrs Henderson said.
“In the meantime, I guess we should be looking at the future of the oval and what will happen there, when and if, eventually it moved.
“We would probably indicate we would be working really closely with them (the WA Football Commission) to develop some kind of consensus on the way forward with the site.”
Sports presenter Tim Gossage called on the Subiaco Council to redesign the oval to a rectangular playing surface via an online blog.
“There has been no guarantees from the Government that the new Burswood Stadium will cater for sports needing a rectangular arena,” he said.
“Ask any Western Force, Perth Glory or rugby league fan or official and they will all tell you a playing field inside an AFL-sized ground doesn’t work for anyone.
“If the Subi council wants to keep their business breathing on sporting weekends, then poach the Force, Glory and WA rugby league away from nib Stadium.”
Mrs Henderson said the atmosphere in Subiaco on football would be the “one thing that would be missed so much.”
“When you come into Subi there’s that vibrancy on Rokeby Road. When the Dockers play there’s all the lovely colours and the banners and the kids jumping up and down.
“That (vibrancy) will be missed over in Burswood because you won’t have that same community around it and infrastructure.”
