KWIK Premier Grade Preview - Week 10

    By RugbyWA Media
    Contributors: Josh Zimmerman

    Nedlands vs Cottesloe
    The Foreshore – 3.30pm
    First round: Cottesloe 17 – 56 Nedlands

Nedlands lost their second game of the season allowing Wests Subiaco to overcome a ten point half time deficit to win 26 – 24 at Rosalie Park on the weekend while Cottesloe slipped to their fourth consecutive loss, this time against Perth Bayswater 24 – 26 at Pat O’Hara Reserve.

At the halfway stage Cottesloe find themselves in eighth and were it not for the tight nature of this year’s competition, with teams taking points off of each other left and right, their season may well have been over. As things stand however they are only six points outside of the top four, although a meeting with an angry Nedlands at The Foreshore is hardly the ideal springboard from which to launch a resurgence, or perhaps it is the perfect game for the Seagulls to make a late charge.

Nedlands will be fired up after going to sleep in the second half against Wests and will look to reassert their dominance in the same way they did against Kalamunda (winning 39 – 7) after their first loss of the season to Rockingham.

    Palmyra vs Associates
    Tompkins Park – 3.30pm
    First round: Associates 24 – 14 Palmyra

Palmyra have flown under the radar somewhat and have won five of their last seven games, the most recent of which was a 42 – 10 hammering of Kalamunda at Tompkins Park. They now occupy fourth on the ladder and believe they still have a fair bit of improvement in them.

Associates have been inconsistent all season stringing together consecutive wins only once and at the halfway mark are in seventh with four wins, four losses and a draw, their most recent game a 17 – 39 loss to University.

Statistically speaking Palmyra possess the best defense in the competition with fewest points allowed while Associates have the second best offense. Traditionally defense trumps offense and on form Paly would be expected to win this one but the unpredictable nature of Soaks means that nothing is guaranteed and if the team that smashed Kalamunda 69 – 0 in round five shows up this could be a cracker.

    Wanneroo vs Kalamunda
    Kingsway – 3.30pm
    First round: Kalamunda 30 – 24 Wanneroo

Wanneroo continued their march up the ladder notching their third win on the trot when they held on to beat Rockingham 35 – 29 at Kingsway and have climbed up to fifth while Kalamunda remain firmly rooted at the foot of the table following their loss to Palmyra.

The Roo Dogs loss to the Wallaroos in the first round of the competition signaled the beginning of a shaky start for Wanneroo who only won one of their next five and Elwee Prinsloo’s side will be keen to avoid the same result and a mid season slump which could drop them out of finals contention.

After an impressive season in 2010 when they finished fifth Kalamunda seem to have taken a few steps backwards and will need to dig deep and re-discover the fighting spirit from last year if they are to improve. Easier said than done however with finals almost out of reach and only pride on the line, Paul King will need to find a way to motivate his charges or the season could drag on forever.

    Wests Subiaco vs UWA
    Rosalie Park – 3.30pm
First round: UWA 32 – 15 Wests Subiaco

Third plays second this weekend when University travels to Rosalie Park to take on Wests Subiaco who are fresh off a thrilling two point victory over Nedlands. UWA won their third in a row beating Associates convincingly at McGillivray Oval and will hope to take that form with them on the road for what on paper is the game of the round.

Both of these sides are in terrific form and should they keep playing at the level they’re at the result of this match will go down to the wire. Wests are at home and riding a wave of emotion after their best performance of the season to date and will look to balance the ledger and hold on to second with a win here.

University will be wary of the strike power of Wests’ backline but buoyed by the fact that they have scored 106 points in the last three rounds and are more than capable of holding their own should this match turn in to the shootout that appears to be on the cards.

    Rockingham vs Perth Bayswater
    Lark Hill Complex – 3.30pm
First round: Perth Bayswater 13 – 12 Rockingham

Perth Bayswater scraped home against an underperforming Cottesloe on the weekend ending a two game losing streak that has seen them drop out of the top four and in to sixth while an impressive second half wasn’t enough to prevent Rockingham from dropping their third in a row to Wanneroo.

This is a must win for both sides but especially for Rockingham who have some experienced and talented campaigners returning to the fold. They need to start winning immediately if they are to play finals in 2011.

Perth Bayswater are only one win outside the top four but will target this and their round 11 meeting with Kalamunda as games they should win if they want to catapult themselves back in to finals contention.

So how's the season going thus far? Has the standard continued to rise?
