Waratahs flyhalf Berrick Barnes out for season with footballer's migraine
BREAKING NEWS: Berrick Barnes' ongoing battle with "footballer's migraine" has ended his Super Rugby season.
Barnes will announce today that he will stand down from the Waratahs squad with immediate effect following a consultation with his neurologist, professor John Watson, yesterday.
The utility back received a series of head injuries during this Super Rugby season and has been suffering the effects of footballer’s migraine for more than a month.
He struggled with the condition on the Waratahs' recent tour of South Africa and left the field early during last Saturday night’s clash with the Highlanders at the Sydney Football Stadium.
"I'm in a bit of a wave at the moment," Barnes said of his head injuries.
"I'm having a few more than I've usually had in the past, so it's probably time now to address it before it becomes too much of a problem.
"I think getting away from the environment, just for a bit, and probably getting rid of the anxiety and the questions and all the box and dice that comes along with it is probably going to help the matter."
Barnes is hopeful of making his comeback for his club side, Sydney University, in the coming weeks and remains available selection for the Wallabies. He will, however, miss this weekend’s crucial match against the Brumbies at ANZ Stadium.
Waratahs coach Chris Hickey paid tribute to Barnes’ contributions to the side.
"He's been an important part of the team and at the end of the day, as we have throughout the season, it's about his personal welfare - that's No.1."
"And it's on extensive medical advice that we've come to this decision."
