AFL TV Rights go for $1.25 Billion

THE AFL has confirmed a $1.253 billion TV rights deal for the next five years, which will see all AFL games shown live.

Channel 7 and pay-TV giant Foxtel have secured the AFL's broadcast contracts, with the online rights going to Telstra.

The free-to-air network will have a minimum of four games per round, while Foxtel will show all nine games live, every week.

Friday night football, as well as Saturday night and Sunday afternoon footy will all be shown live on free-to-air.

Only the Saturday afternoon game will be subject to delayed coverage on free-to-air.

All finals will be broadcast live on free-to-air TV in all parts of Australia.

What do you think of the new deal? Tell us below

"The overwhelming guiding principle of these negotiations was to deliver our supporters a better TV deal wherever they are around Australia," said AFL Commision Chairman Mike Fitzpatrick.

"This is a great deal for football and a great deal for all of the football industry which has contributed to the growth of the game.

"Most importantly this is a great deal for football supporters who remain the heart and soul of our game."

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou spelled out the new arrangements for free-to-air coverage across the country.

"Channel Seven will broadcast a minimum of four games per weekend in a standard round," he said.

"In NSW, the ACT and Queensland, there will be four games of live football on free to air every week. In these markets, all four games will be broadcast on 7Mate, creating a free to air AFL destination supported by strong cross promotion support on the Seven primary channel.

"In Victoria, Friday night football will now be live, with a reduced delay to be near live at 30 minutes in South Australia and a reduced delay in WA for Friday night games.

"In Victoria, Saturday night football and Sunday afternoon football will be live on free to air, with only the Saturday afternoon game on delay. In SA and WA, the majority of Saturday night and Sunday games will be live.

"This represents an outstanding result for our fans across the country, with more live football on free to air television than ever before."

Foxtel will provide a dedicated footy channel, to be called Fox Sports AFL.

The Herald Sun also understands Foxtel will show the Brownlow Medal live, simultaneously with Channel 7.

Seven and Ten were expected to bid together, but fell out in recent weeks over money and a court dispute involving defecting Seven executive James Warburton.

Channel 9 has emerged as a possible home for Saturday or Sunday afternoon football should Seven opt not to broadcast all four of its free-to-air matches.

The windfall will trigger a push by the game's 800 players for a bumper pay rise in their Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations.

Players have told the AFL they want a fixed 27 per cent cut of all future revenues, which, on last year's figures, equates to $220 million.

Geezus, the NRL independent commission will be under pressure to deliver something similar when it's their turn to negotiate the TV rights!

Agreed - although we probably won't hear anything about the NRL rights for some months as the current NRL TV deal expires next year

What did the Rugby rights go for last year?

How does that deal work out per game?

Surely will come to a close comparison between SupeRugby and AFL?

Doing a rough calculation, rugby doesn't come out well in comparison.

It's doing better than the NRL on a per game basis but that will change if the NRL gets $1 billion next time as they're hoping.

Was listening to an interview of Darren Bennett on the wireless earlier, he said in the NFL punters are getting paid from US$750k to $1.5m. Puts things into perspective a bit...

The NFL's current TV deal is worth $20.4 billion.

Incidentally, if the AFLPA gets its way, players could be earning up to twice as much under the new deal.

They will also need to deliver a similar FTA deal. They will want to match the AFL mix if they are to stay in the hunt for junior athletes and maintain their competitive position re viewer numbers, particularly in GWS. They will have more leverage under the IC. As for Rugby; well I reckon the lack of FTA coverage is the game's Achilles heel in the race for new players and TV audiences.

Just expanding on my earlier post I'd have to say that the elephant in the room just p*ssed all over the carpet... I was going over the AFL TV rights deal last night and they seem to have pretty much won out on everything!

    - Cracking $1 billion was expected but I think $1.253 billion is higher than most people were expecting – although maybe it’s a currency thing if the actual payment is USD
    - Per game, it’s enormously better than the rugby and NRL rights (the AFL already gets more per game now)
    - 4 live games on free-to-air in every state every week – the NRL gets more viewers now but I wonder how this would change things
    - The AFLPA wants 27% of revenue when the next collective bargaining agreement is negotiated, meaning players could earn up to twice as much under the new deal
    - The NRL’s new deal isn’t due until 2013, and rugby’s until 2015 so the AFL gets a free kick

This won’t greatly affect rugby initially but it could still end up being a big loser if it’s not careful – the NRL is expecting their next TV rights deal to crack the $1 billion mark too, especially after the AFL deal. Rugby currently gets more money than the NRL per game but this would change if the NRL gets what it’s after, and the NRL has a couple of years head start!

I read the AFL media report on the new TV deal where they broke it down state by state and I have to say unless WA AFL fans are willing to fork out for Foxtel then not alot changes

    • Friday night AFL to still be delayed - not by as much but the game bounces down live at 5:50 and starts on Channel 7 at 7:50
    • Eagles and Dockers home games will still be delayed unless sold out well before the game start time

Problem is by time the coverage starts on FTA it wil be going up against the same game that is live on Fox. Foxtel actually paid a large proportion of the deal and Channel 7's only paid $450 million because Fox is desperate to sell subscriptions in areas where it has traditionally not done as well in areas like WA, SA and Victoria (funnily enough the AFL states)

I agree with Shasta that the lack of Super Rugby on FTA is a massive downside for Rugby in Australia

The NRL are breaking their TV Rights into several different categories: NRL, State of Origin and International RL (might still only be Australia, NZ and England but it still rates it's arse off on the East Coast). Channel 7 have indicated in the past that they would throw the Kitchen sink at picking up State of Origin

I wonder how much SANZAR is getting for the feed into non-SANZAR nations in the Fox deals?
Perhaps on the ramp up of 7's and 15's in the US will roll an interest enough to get some decent payments.

It's one of those things where rugby needed pay-tv to firstly survive and then get to where it is today. However it looks like it now needs to 'outgrow' it if it doesn't want to get left behind. The Wallabies are great but they're only around for 3 months each year.

Unfortunately they had SANZAR over a barrel during the last negotiations - they threatened to cut 30 or 40 percent from the deal if the ARU wanted to put a game on FTA each week. Hopefully they have a good plan for next time.

Again I agree - but Pay TV only makes up a small percentage of the Australian market

I guess it's a complicated process when you have to bid on behalf of 3 nations as SANZAR would have to
