About 21 years ago I was a part of the Air Force in the Northern Territory. My boss at the time asked me to come along to Rugby League training to give him a hand as a water boy, the team at the time also played Rugby Union during the wet season.
** NB, the Northern Territory has 2 seasons, Wet season from October to March and the Dry season from April to September - give or take. League and Union are played at opposite times of the year. League during the dry season and Union in the wet season. One of the scariest problems is that you never want to be at the bottom of the ruck in a Union match in the Northern Territory. There is a genuine risk of drowning. The puddles from the torrential rain are huge.
Anyway - after 2 seasons of League and Union, I grew to have a passion for Union that I continue to enjoy now. My experience with Rugby Union went from running the water to a continued involvement with the committee from Property Manager, Secretary to Vice President.
After about 5 years the Air Force moved me to Sydney, and I stopped being involved with Rugby Union. I dont know why - I just never bothered to go looking for a club.
Until last thursday.
After work I got off the train and started to walk home as I always do, today I found a sign, "would you like to be a part of UWS Rugby?"
Yeah, why not.
So - i called the number.
Told the guy I was old and fat and wanted to help out. He said that training starts in 10 minutes and come on down.
I did
And I still cant get the smile off my face.
I am going to have to re-read Fulvio's excellent series of articles about how to be a member of a Rugby Team. Maybe one day he will write an article about how to be a member of "old boys" so I can learn how to pass on guru like wisdom.
If you like rugby - and lets face it you wouldnt be here if you didnt - go find a rugby club and get involved.
