WEST Australian mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest has emerged as the mystery man behind South Sydney's $2 million attempt to sign NRL superstar Greg Inglis after the Broncos withdrew its offer.
PerthNow can reveal Forrest has joined forces with Russell Crowe and Anthony Mundine to try to pull off the Rabbitohs' greatest signing coup.
The Broncos ran out of patience with Inglis Saturday, sensationally withdrawing a two-year deal worth more than $1 million.
We have worked long and hard on these negotiations, as have the other parties, said Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen.
But with training already underway and no sign of the matter being resolved in a manner that would benefit the Broncos and its playing roster, it is time for the club to move on"
Forrest has offered Inglis more than $100,000 a year to act as an ambassador for Generation One, his public awareness campaign designed to encourage employers across the country to offer jobs to indigenous people.
    Start of sidebar.
The deal is salary-cap exempt as third-party employment but is conditional on the Test and Origin champion playing for the Rabbitohs.
Other clubs, including Parramatta, the Bulldogs, the Warriors and the Raiders could also enter a bidding war but it's understood the deal is all but done with the Rabbitohs.
The billionaire businessman Forrest is one of Australia's most connected entrepreneurs. He has regular contact with James Packer, the Murdoch family, politicians and other leading corporate types.
It is believed he was introduced to the Rabbitohs through part-owner Peter Holmes a Court, an old Perth boy who still has an extensive network of contacts in the west.
Inglis spent yesterday with his fiancee in Brisbane, having been given a 24-hour deadline to sign with the Broncos - or leave.
The ultimatum was delivered to his agent Alan Gainey yesterday as the champion centre was weighing up the huge deal with Forrest on top of more than $300,000 Souths can pay him.
As exclusively revealed in PerthNow two weeks ago, Inglis's deal with the Broncos fell over because of an unpaid $113,000 legal bill that has to be settled with the Melbourne Storm before he will be granted a release.
The Broncos refused to pay the bill because it would put them over the salary cap, but Souths claim they can squeeze him in on a back-ended deal.
How this could be achieved without having to shed another star player is the biggest talking point among other clubs. They are preparing to challenge NRL boss David Gallop and demand answers from salary cap auditor Ian Schubert if it goes ahead.
Mundine's role in the negotiations is also under the spotlight.
PerthNow understands he offered to pay the legal bill to get the clearance from the Storm, but the NRL ruled any payment by Mundine would still have to be included in the cap.
"It's clearly a payment that is going to get him to that club," Gallop said yesterday. The Broncos insisted yesterday they had given Inglis every opportunity to wear their colours.
"'We think it is an honour to represent our club and thus felt compelled to place a deadline of this afternoon for Greg to sign the contract he and his manager had agreed to," Cullen said.
"He was unable to commit to the club so we felt we had to make this call. When the possibility of Greg coming to the Broncos arose some months ago, the club always said it was entering negotiations only because of the stature of the player involved.
"But we also said at the time that we were very happy and confident in the squad we had assembled.
"We thank the Storm and the NRL for their co-operation, and wish Greg all the best with his future and hope he can resolve it to his satisfaction.
"We know that this move will ensure the club is able to keep our current crop of talent together for many seasons to come."

It's believed Mundine has changed tack and offered to pay all legal expenses in a court action against the Storm over the disputed bill.
"Choc doesn't like seeing any of his brothers getting dudded," said a close friend of Inglis. "He's vowed to back him to hilt."
Making matters more complicated for Inglis was the prospect of challenging the Storm over the legal fees if he played in Brisbane. That would have meant a News Limited employee suing a News Limited-owned club.
The irony of Inglis returning to Brisbane yesterday to be with fiancee Sally Robinson is the Test centre only gained a release from the Storm on compassionate grounds after she was transferred to Queensland by her employers.
It's those original terms of release that has left the Storm club bewildered by a potential move to Sydney.
"We're just as confused as the rest of the marketplace," Storm CEO Ron Gauci said.
"It was on compassionate grounds [that the Storm offered to release Inglis], and that was his request.
"All of these admissions were agreed upon, and supposedly they're now reneging on those agreements.
"It's very confusing."Gauci maintained the Storm's position hadn't changed in regards to paying the legal bill and added that the saga had left such a sour taste that it was unlikely Inglis would be seen in Melbourne colours again.

Now this shows there are Western Australians with a lot of money that have a genuine interest in Rugby League and given the right frameworks will definitely support a NRL team in WA and would help them along their path.

West Australia needs an NRL team by 2013

After hearing of the crowd figure in Perth for last weekend’s trial match (around 9,000), I decided to express my opinion about the topic which is constantly debated amongst all Rugby League supporters: expansion.
This figure, along with 16,000 for a regular season game last year, reinforces the need for an expansion licence to be granted to Western Australia for admission into the NRL in 2013.
The other main bids – Central Queensland, Central Coast (NSW) and a second team in New Zealand – are all viable options. However, they do not solve the problem which has been plaguing the game since the Super League war: the money generated from the television deal.
There is no doubt that the price for the rights to the NRL competition will increase substantially should a team in Perth be granted a licence.
Furthermore, apart from the obvious financial benefits for the game, the current situation in Western Austraian Rugby League is solid. A Western Australian side, comprised of only local playing talent, participates in the NSWRL Jim Beam Cup competition. And this year, a Western Australian SG Ball side, again made up of local juniors, has been entered into the NSWRL u18′s competition.
Apart from the obvious fan support and playing talent, the Members Equity Stadium is a perfect base for the side.
Perth has the infrastructure and fan support for an NRL side; increasing revenue, most notably through the TV deal, should be the main priority for David Gallop and the NRL and the expansion of the game into the West would certainly appeal to broadcasters.

Tallis chooses WA over own state
Rugby league great Gorden Tallis and South Sydney prop Ben Ross have urged the NRL to include a Perth-based side in the competition by 2013 if the planned expansion goes ahead.
The WA Rugby League’s campaign for a local NRL side has been boosted by a pledge of more than $80 million by the Western Australia state government to upgrade ME Bank Stadium.
Tallis, who notched 17 State of Origin games for Queensland and 214 NRL matches over 13 seasons for the Dragons and Broncos, said rugby league needed a Perth team to become a truly national competition.
The WA Reds played two seasons in the NRL in the mid-90s but were shut down in 1997 after defecting to the rival Super League.
"(League boss) Dave Gallop did talk about expanding our game in 2013 (when the new TV rights start) and I think Perth, in my opinion, is the No.1 place to come. I just think it makes sense," Tallis said.
"We know there’s a market here for it, they just need their own team."
Tallis, now a forwards coach with South Sydney, and Ross were in Perth this week to promote the June 26 clash between the Rabbitohs and Melbourne Storm at ME Bank Stadium.
Ross believed quality players would jump at the chance to play for a Perth side.
"I’ve talked to a few boys and they’d all love to be over here playing football," Ross said.
"It’s a perfect environment. We are in the middle of winter now and it’s nice and warm. That’s something you dream about as a player to have a good environment.
"The boys, no matter what, would come over here to play.
"Hopefully we can get up a Perth team in 2013. That would be exciting for me, because I’m coming off contract around then."
The redevelopment of ME Bank Stadium, home of Super 14 side Western Force and A-League outfit Perth Glory, is expected to begin in 2012, with improvements made to corporate facilities, player change rooms and toilet facilities.
WA Minister for Sport and Recreation Terry Waldron hoped the venue would ultimately become a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting up to 25,000 spectators.
Meanwhile, Ross revealed he was on track to make his comeback from a broken neck for the Rabbitohs’ round 13 clash with the Cowboys on June 7.
Ross, who hasn’t played since suffering the horror injury in round one last year when with Cronulla, has had a frustrating wait for the all clear after signing a cut-rate one-year deal with the Rabbitohs.
He’s yet to turn out for the myrtle and green prompting speculation he may not play again at all but Ross was confident a scan on June 1 would give him the all clear to resume his career.
"I think it’s been 66 weeks now so I’m a bit over training and I’m a bit over hanging out with Gorden Tallis," he said with a smile.
"Just getting back on the field will be great.
"If there was any danger, I wouldn’t come back. That’s why it (the rehab) has been so long."

The fact that Gallop has identified Perth and the Central Coast specifically speaks volumes for their chances and spells doom for other hopefuls like central Queensland or a second team in Brisbane. The game learned valuable lessons during the 1990s when franchises were established in the game's outposts like Perth and Adelaide with little regard to infrastructure and financial viability.
It is one of the reasons the code took so long to include another team and Gold Coast was made to jump through several hoops before it was admitted in 2007.

It could well be third time lucky for the Reds in Perth. After a tough relatively short history, the Reds are so far doing everything right to get back into first grade rugby league.
The Reds started as the Western Reds for the 1995 and 1996 ARL seasons. The name back then was strong but somewhat misplaced considering the Western Suburbs Magpies were in existence in first grade.
Then along comes the Super League turmoil and the Reds rebranded to become the Perth Reds. Debate continues to today whether the Perth Reds were a failure or a victim of the Super League war, but one thing that we knew was that the Perth Reds will forever be a team that couldn’t survive in professional Rugby League.
They rebranded again and in 2006, in conjecture with the WARL and ARL, became the WA Reds.
They became a under 18’s team, bringing through local juniors. Not too long ago, Curtis Rona was signed by the Roosters Toyota Cup side.
It’s not going to be easy, but the possibilities by far out way the risks for the NRL in expanding into Perth, playing out of a rectangular NIB stadium, taking games to areas such as Bunbury, Broome, Kalgoorlie, Port Headland and Geraldton.
The game might only get one more shot to make it work, but rugby league needs to believe in itself and hand a license to the WA Reds for the 2013 season.
Remember this a team is not just for the people of Perth, not just for people on the western seaboard, but a team for all of Western Australia.
