    FORCE PLAYERS IN ACTION

Seven Emirates Western players will be in run-on squads during the Preliminary Finals of the Shute Shield in Sydney this weekend.
Top ranked side Eastwood will feature Matt Dunning and James Stannard in their starting line-up while Commonwealth Games bound winger Nick Cummins will be aiming to help Randwick into another Grand Final.

The Galloping Greens have played off in the last three Grand Finals but failed to get their hands on the trophy and are desperate for another crack at the big game. The Woodies meanwhile would feel their season was one of lost opportunity if they didn’t progress to the last weekend of the season after claiming the minor premiership.

Eastwood boast an impressive arsenal of front rowers with Dunning, Benn Robinson and Damien Fitzpatrick starting while Perth product Kieran Longbottom is ready to spring to action from the bench.

There will be 15 players with test or Super Rugby experience starting the game with more waiting in reserve.

In the other Preliminary Final five-time defending champions Sydney University will tackle Southern Districts.

The Students boast four Emirates Western Force players in their run-on side with Nathan Charles at hooker, Ben McCalman and Jono Jenkins on the flanks and Mitch Inman at outside centre.

Sydney Uni has taken part in preliminary finals every year for more than a decade, while Southern Districts – who earned the first week of the finals off following a last round victory over minor premiers Eastwood – are yet to qualify for a premiership grand final since the St George and Port Hacking clubs came together in 1989.

Sydney Uni is currently on the longest winning streak of 2010 with eleven straight wins, surpassing opponents Southern Districts’ mark which was achieved in a perfect ten to start the year.

Sydney’s hopes of another tilt at the title have been bolstered with every player in the starting XV currently contracted to a Super Rugby team.

Pretty interesting line-ups in both sides. Eastwood has an edge in the tight five but Randwicks loose forwards are very talented- not sure if they'll have had much game time together though.

As for Sydney Uni, good line-up aside you have to be worried about a Southern Districts pack with Sitaleki Timani, Radike Samo and Kane Douglas. They will want to keep things tight because they won't match Uni for work rate but they'll definitely put pressure on Mumm and Dennis who are pretty slight for second rowers. You can't see Southern Districts lasting long if the ball is spread wide though.

    What A Joke

this is why the Shite Shield competition is a big joke, no club should be in this positon. Sydney Uni bench will probably have another 7 S14 level players

It's not hard to see why Penrith and paramatta on the bottom of the table.

The ARC competition ensured that the player talent was evenly spread and kept a lot of the force players in Perth. Scrapping this competition was surely the dumbest thing the ARU have ever done.

Instead now we have players heading to SA or NZ to play.

If they hadn't scrapped it the ARU would be broke and all of our players would have been evenly spread throughout Europe.

I don't know about that. The biggest losses it made were the underwriting of the Sydney teams (which made no attempts to use money wisely), the hiring of venues too big for their needs and the paying of the ABC to broadcast it. Hell without the digital TV going round at the moment one of 7/9/10 is bound to do it for free if it becomes regular.

In 3 years when it gets a bit of recognition and cred it would have been pretty close to sustainable and the improvements to depth in the Super 14 teams/Wallabies would make up for that shortfall with happy fans because of games won.
