Kings to be part of Super 16?

    JJ Harmse

Brisbane – The Southern Kings are set to play Super rugby in 2013.

However, the Eastern Cape franchise will not have to replace one of the five existing South African franchises as the Super 15 is set to become a Super 16 in three years’ time.

The Kings will then be the sixth South African franchise participating in the tournament.

Sport24 has reliably learned that the proposal by South Africa at a SANZAR meeting had been accepted in principle by New Zealand and Australia.

A working committee will iron out the finer details of the issue.

The inclusion of the Kings, who will play in the South African conference, may mean that South African teams start their Super rugby campaigns two weeks earlier than usual.

That's pretty bizarre; All the other papers reporting this news seem to be attributing the sport24.com report. Sport24 must have a good 'sauce' ...

They should just get rid of the Lions

Dreadful on the field and their crowds would be comparable to an ARC crowd

...........and, of course, nobody in the Kings organisation would be "feeding the chooks" at Sport24 because they have an agenda to run, either.

I'm actually of the opinion that, now that we've moved to a conference system, South Africa can do what they like with theirs - not our problem.

bugger up the home and away rounds of the tournament though. We'll miss out on playing two SA teams each year, what's the bet somebody'll get the two good ones one year?

This will also never get legs in SA, because the extra time required would kill the Currie Cup.

If, however they can get it on the table, it might be a catalyst for fixing up the conference system to make the whole tournament mor profitable (everybody plays everybody once and the conferences play a home round)

Well SA is the only one pushing it so I'm not sure I agree with that. Going from 5 to 6 teams though, it will either mean that the SA teams have to give up their two bye rounds or start earlier than everyone else.
