A $50 says the Tahs end up with a round 6 and 12 bye.

    If they wanted to even up the competition, the best* team in each country would play the best 4 from the other two countries, 2nd would play 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th, 3rd plays 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th, 4th plays 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th and 5th plays 2nd to 5th.

This could mean that consistently good teams never play consistently weak teams from other countries, but is that a bad thing? I never enjoy 50 point thrashings (not even when I support the winning team).

The issue with that is that teams could conceivably miss out on playing each other for several years in a row.

Yes, and if it was one of the big teams (eg, the Crusaders) you'd be pretty miffed, but it would:
    a) result in a more even table as better teams play better teams.
    b) penalise the poor teams financially by them not playing the better teams (so likely to be lower attendances).
    c) allow the fixtures to be set in advance so that there is no question of bias, and
    d) fans know the fixtures as soon as the previous season ended.

I'd imagine as with 2006, we will know the fixtures for the next few years when they are finalised.

I reckon it's better planning year to year, that way you can better plan things like big opening rounds, or grand final rematches early in the season
