Wallabies five-eighth Quade Cooper banned for 2 weeks after dangerous tackle

Wallabies five-eighth Quade Cooper banned after dangerous tackle

    July 25, 2010
The Wallabies have suffered a massive Tri Nations blow with red-hot playmaker Quade Cooper banned for two Tests for a dangerous tackle the 30-13 victory over South Africa.
Cooper will miss the upcoming clash against the All Blacks in Melbourne as well as the August 7 Bledisloe Cup Test in Christchurch.

A judicial hearing in Brisbane on Sunday morning found the 22-year-old five-eighth guilty of a spearing tackle on opposite number Morne Steyn midway through the second half at Suncorp Stadium.

Cooper was sin-binned for the offence but his punishment was significantly enhanced after being cited by the match commissioner after the game.

Born in the Waikato region of New Zealand, Cooper will now be prevented from making his first appearance against the All Blacks until the last match of the Tri Nations in Sydney in September.

Cooper will be available for the two Test tour of South Africa in August.

That tackle didn't look that bad. I thought both him and Fourie were pretty unlucky to even be carded.

Ditto. I didn't think there was much in either tackle.

    You're not serious are you?

I thought QC's was alot worse.

Although they were both soft as hell and a penalty each would have been more than adequate.

Too bad the touch judges were in charge of last nights game.

Credit to the referee that, even if they were decisions I don't agree with, he was consistent.

You guys really need to take a look at yourself. A spear tackle is the worst thing on a rugby field and should be instant yellow if it was deliberate or not - if it looked bad or not.

the only problem here was that the one got suspended for 4 weeks and the other only 2 weeks they both should have copped 4 weeks

Have a look at the video here

I don't think you would get any argument with that. But a spear tackle as, I understand it, is one where the player is lifted and DELIBERATELY driven head first into the deck. The Lifting tackle is outlawed because of it's potential not necessarily the intent. Both last night were in the second category, IMO.

The match reviewers are charged with determining the intent and severity. Too bad they can't be consistent.

I'm fine, thanks, pieter. Fourie didn't just lift his man up and drive him down, he turned him a bit over, it wasn't from a great height and the tackled player was not in any real danger that I could see. Cooper did something pretty similar. At least the ref was consistent in binning them both.

I, too, think spear tackles are incredibly dangerous and inexcusable, but even on review, neither of those tackles seemed intentionally or effectively dangerous.

However, the Powers That Be obviously think differently, and that Fourie's infringement was worse than Quade's, so therefore I am Wrong.

Interesting is the reaction of the different players when given Yellow.

Was simply the match review panel justifying their existence by binning the both of them.
