World Cup call-up for WA pair

World Cup call-up for WA pair

NICK TAYLOR, The West Australian July 17, 2010, 11:31 am

Two West Australians will pull on the Wallaroo jumper at next month's women's Rugby World Cup in England.

Debby Hodgkinson has the chance of a rare double, having already won the World Cup Sevens last year. Bec Clough has made the national squad in just her third season in the game.

Hodgkinson, 29, a draughtsman, was the most decorated player in women's rugby last year, taking every accolade on offer: Player of the Sevens Series, the International Rugby Board's Women's Personality of the Year and Australia's best Sevens player, man or woman, at the John Eales Medal.

The No.8 began her international career eight years ago and is now one of rugby's benchmark players.

Clough, 22, who plays in the second row and made her debut for the Wallaroos against Samoa last year, is studying for a Bachelor of Criminology and Juvenile Justice at Edith Cowan University.

Both women are with the Cottesloe club and train six times a week with Western Force academy members.

It will be Hodgkinson's second World Cup. "I'm really excited," she said. "It's a great buzz.

"We don't get as many Test matches as the men but the internal trials are just as tough."

Hodgkinson already has set her sights on the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Olympics, when women's Sevens will be introduced.

I would have thought these days we would have been wondering whether she was better termed an engineering drawing specialist?
