Bulls Gore Wanneroo

A powerful display by the LJ Hooker Kalamunda Bulls tight five paved the way when Kalamunda traveled to Wanneroo on Saturday. Going into the game without a win to date the Bulls took both win and bonus points when they defeated Wanneroo 36-17.

From the start the front row of Fihi Kivalu, Aaron Minett and Johnny Williams took it to their opponents and dominated in the exchanges. Not content with superiority in the set phases, they worked well in the loose with Kivalu prominent in charging the ball up.

Kalamunda settled the best and opened the scoring with a well worked team try. Wanneroo attacked through the midfield and made ground before the Bulls midfield pairing of Conan Tutara and Tom Peacock tightened up and closed down the Wanneroo options. With this defensive rearrangement Wanneroo were no longer able to exploit this option and the Bulls forwards repelled them every time they did get into Kalamunda territory.

Kalamunda went into the halftime break ahead 20-8 and continued their relentless pressure from the start of the second half. The Kalamunda forwards continued to lay a solid attacking platform for the backs and pressure was converted into points. The Bulls lineout play was impressive and Ben Calder featured strongly in the air as he continued to steal Wanneroo ball almost at will.

Kalamunda lost its way in the last ten minutes off play, as the coaching staff made changes to provide game time for players, but the damage was already done and the Bulls had finally notched up their first win for the season.

Best on ground could not be separated between Kivalu and Williams with the other tight forwards of Minett, Adam Todd and Ari Ngakuru having great games.

Earlier saw both the Kalamunda Colts and Reserves fail to make the most of their opportunities when they went down 13-3 and 10-6 respectively. The Kalamunda Women’s team continued on their good early season form beating Wanneroo 15-12.
