    ATTWOOD STAMPING CHARGES DISMISSED

Two stamping charges against England lock Dave Attwood were dismissed on procedural grounds this morning, the Australian Rugby Union have confirmed.

Attwood, 23, appeared before a disciplinary panel in Perth after being cited over two alleged incidents in England's 28-28 draw with the Australian Barbarians.

The Gloucester forward was alleged to have stamped on scrum-half Josh Valentine in the 34th minute and his opposite number Mitch Chapman in the 50th minute.

But England's team management successfully argued that Australian citing commissioner Scott Nowland could not be considered an "independent authority" and the charges were dropped.

The ARU statement read: "England team management successfully argued the hearing of two alleged stamping incidents involving Attwood could not proceed because the citing commissioner, as an Australian, was not an independent authority."

As England were playing a Barbarian side (who weren't allowed to sing the national anthem!), surely an Australian citing commissioner is independent.

Anyway, why should the citing need to be independent? Any citing should be judged by independent reviewers, but why does the person who raises it have to be independent, too?

    Interesting.

Did the English object to the appointment of the citing commisioner before the game?

    Was it on video?

What recognised rule of law or of procedural fairness is compromised by the nationality of a duly appointed reporting (not adjudicating) official?

Don't bother answering, the questions are purely rhetorical.

Does anyone else see the cat of expediency devouring the mouse of justice?

What has the guy been playing in France or something?

Yes he is guilty of stomping but because the citing officer is Australian you cant touch him!

could equally be argued that stomping on Valentine does not constitute an offense, rather a community service!

I say bring back good old rucking. We moved more loosies and halfbacks away from the ball than any ref has done with these powder puff laws. We also copped a fair few studs on backs, heads, arms and legs if we fell over or near the ball. Bring back the biff.

So instead of moving it to an independent adjudicator it gets dismissed?
Bit of a slap in the face of Nowland too.

I would assume the citing officer isn't independent and therefore no citations would be valid........let's ruck the shit out of him!

I watched the two videos, both instances is of players lying near the ball. There was bugger all in either of em.

Bring it back into the game. Less penalties for not releasing and not rolling away.

So, it's not a case of stamping or not stamping, but that the citing officer was somehow not capable of doing his job?
